Why do I have 19 packages of iron on patches? What can one do, besides the obvious, with iron on patches? Does anyone even use them anymore?

You could cut them into different shapes for applique.

Dorothy, that is a great idea! I had not thought of that. Thanks!

Besides applique, you could also make some reward badges for your children.

you could let your kids add them to their clothes... and then teach them how making their own stuff is fun..

When I made aprons for a local restaurant I used small pieces of iron ons to reinforce the corners of the pockets on the insides. The fabric is so heavy. I'd iron the pieces on and then stitch discreetly over that. It kept them from ripping from the heavy duty use (order pads, etc.) that they got.

I used iron on patches, the heavy ones, on the end of my ironing board when it either got yucky or a burn hole in it.

The first thing I thought after reading this was "you silly girl, you don't know my DH ~ of course some people still use them"
I like the cut out ideas.

Sancin, my small craft ironing board is pretty gross, maybe my daughter would like to decorate it for me with some of those patches! I bet I'd have a cheerful ironing board!

Lendlube, I'll have to check my gardening aprons - I wonder if my pruners have poked holes in them.

Pinecone, you did make me giggle. Do you want me to share with you?

I was thinking the same thing when I was in JoAnn for their 50% off notions wall sale. They had iron-on patches in funky prints . . . it matched some yardage I've seen for sale in various places. Cutting out shapes and using them for appliques is an excellent idea. What is the aftercare requirement for them? Do you have to sew around the edges or are they made to stay in place with a permanent bond?

I'd sew around the edges -- especially if you want to wash them.

I wish my stuff was in the funky prints and colors. Nope, boring blue for me...
