I am just getting back to sewing for myself after a 15 year hiatus. I have so many alterations needed I almost need to draft a pattern from scratch. I use the pivot and slide method. I live alone and the tissue pinning method won't work for me. I have very narrow square shoulders and a long back length. I bought a simple blouse pattern by my upper bust measurements The alternations I need are: Lengthen the front and back Increase the bust and hips Square the shoulders. I think I used to lengthen the front and back first. However I can't recall if I squared the shoulders or increased the bust and hips next. I think I moved the bust darts and moved the button hole placements last. Any suggestions would be great!! Barbara |

Always start at the shoulders and work your way down. Do the bust next and then add whatever length you need in front and back. You will need to add more length to the front anyway, once you've done the bust adjustment. You might as well add this length to the extra you say you need. Then adjust for the hips. Button hole placement comes last. Hope this helps. |

Thank you!! I forgot that the front will be longer after I do the other alterations. I used to use an altered basic blouse and pants pattern as a template to alter more complicated patterns. However, in 15 years is seems that everything on my body has shifted. The only alteration that is still the same is my shoulder width. LOL Barbara |

I'm glad your shoulders haven't changed. I just read about someone whose shoulders are now asymmetrical after working at a computer for 20 yrs. Sigh...I know about the changing body syndrome. I've been updating my own basic patterns. Lowering the bust point, making allowances for a tummy I've developed...sigh You may want to look it up previous posts on button placement when you get to that stage. There is some very helpful information on that. |
