I know, I know, it's still a ways off but I want ideas for things I can make for the few (luckily) gifts that I like to give each year.

I'm sure some of you have already started. How about some ideas to get us motivated??

Thx, Lennie

Hmm. Well, I found some cute flannel printed with classic Ford trucks that I'm going to use to make something - possibly some pyjama pants or perhaps a full set of pyjamas - for winter for my little nephew, but I'm not sure if that will be for Christmas or his birthday in November. I guess it depends when I finish it!

I could definitely use some ideas. I tend to wait until the last minute and end up buying something that doesn't seem quite right...I'd like to make more gifts this year, because it just seems more special.

Last year for Christmas I bought sets of hand towels in different colors and decorated the bottom edges with nice lace and ribbon. I also took jelly mason jars and filled with potpourri and covered the top with lace and ribbon and used dried roses that I collected from work and added that to decoration. I gave them to all the female servers, bussers and hostesses that I work with. It was allot of work and time consuming but they all loved the fact that I made something for them.

Awwwwwww Lennie. I have just finished the most stressful 3 weeks of sewing I've had, and now you are doing this to me!!!! I don't even know where July went, and now I have to worry about Christmas. Cant we stop the clock for a little bit, just so I can catch up with everything else??
Cheers, Soph.

I'm happiest when I am sewing!

Sorry, sorry! I'm not thrilled with the prospect either. My happiest day is usually January 2nd when all is said and done. :re:

It's not like I have time right now to do anything anyway. I just don't want another holiday season to go by without some homemade gifts. Thought I'd get the ball rolling.

You all know that by the time Halloween is here it's downhill from there (timewise, I mean.)

Here I am trying to get last year's gifts mailed. Some ideas are golf club covers, embroidered towels, pillowcases, placemats with matching napkins plus casserole carriers and/or aprons.

Lennie, I don't know if you have any teens or college students to gift, but the Towel turbans from a couple of years ago are in great demand around here, still after all this time.. I get requests quite frequently for a spare or a replacement in some cases, because they have worn out the original.. Placemats and napkins are good, also.. Casserole carriers are in great demand around here also..I make little half aprons by the ton.. from Christmas fabrics, takes 1 fat quarter 2 yds pre-gathered lace, and 1 1/2 yds grosgrain ribbon 1 inch wide for the waistband.. Makes a good gift or bazaar item..

Good ideas, everyone! I like the ideas I've read and I'll stick them safely in the back of my mind for now. Oh no! Better be writing them down since they won't be here when the board shuts down.....

Our Costco here has both Halloween and Christmas decorations out already! Sheesh!! I have started thinking (and I mean that lightly) about the white wet season and have NO idea what I'm going to do. We have been planning our Christmas Party at work and I think I may attempt to do a quilted table runner as a door prize. This year I may just send money to everyone. Then I can sew for our cruise in January!!!

I really like the fabric bowls, baskets, and boxes...they are easy to make, and you can choose fabric prints to reflect the recipient's personality, interests, or tastes. You can also use them to hold a purchased gift.
Take care,

Boy Donna, sounds like you had more luck with those thread eating bowls, etc. than I did. I made a couple and though they looked okay it was really, really hard to do better than just okay. The ones I did were very angular and maybe those are tougher. Maybe I should have another look.

Hi Lennie,
They do use a lot of thread. :bg: I found that I had to go around a couple of times in some instances, but I was satisfied with the finished result.

I don't know if this made any difference, but I used a craft interfacing(made for things like fabric bowls) that has adhesive on both sides...it eliminated the need for the Wonder Under.
Take care,
Donna

fabric bowls? Casserole holders?? Please share with me a link to instructions if you have one? They sound KEWL! I soooo long for the time to sew like you girls do. I'm really quite envious...

Years ago I made a very heavy quilt for my (at the time single son) out of discontinued fabric samples from my shop... velvets, wovens, cords... I used my regular dacron for the padding and it ended up about an inch thick... he loved it... he's been married now 5 years and all 3 grandkids have asked for a "Daddy Quilt" of their own this year. So... thats on my Christmas list of things to make.

My favorite casserole cover is a Kwik Sew pattern.. You have to purchase it.. Its still in the book. I saw it the other day.. Has a 2 piece strap about 3 inches wide across the top with 2 buttonholes and buttons to fasten.. Also has a draw cord to make it fit most any casserole size.. There are a couple of other items in the pattern, but I can't tell you what they are.(cannot remember, right now). I've only used the casserole cover..

I'm planning on....now if they get done I'll be lucky, probably......a renaissance dress for 1 dil, placemats/napkins for my neice and my sister, small wall quilt for neices dbf and maybe one for my bil if I can find a nice train panel. I am working on a king size Rob Peter to Pay Paul quilt for my dd but she now wants respiratory therapist study guides and flash cards so the quilt may end up being her bday or next Christmas gift as I'm going to have to have it quilted since it's a king size and the money is close to the same at least if you just consider the top of the quilt. LOL. Going to make matching aprons for 1 dgd and her mom and giving her (she's 4) a mixing bowl filled with cooking stuff and a kid's cookbook and will make matching potholders.

I am hoping to have my embroidery machien out of layaway and at least have some work time on it under my belt to do a few things too-my dd bf will want new golf towels and the girls always want kitchen towels, etc.

Better get busy!

I just finished a table runner for my daughter for Christmas and I have two wall hangings to make for her.
I am also doing PJ's for my granddaughter. Maybe some fabric bowls.

But I have 3 baby quilts to get done too. 2 I need by the middle of Sept. and one for Februray.

Hi Libby,

I was hoping you could tell me how to make (or direct me to a site) the towel turbans you're talking about. I just found out that a granddaughter of a lovely neighbor of mine is turning 14 on Tues. The girl comes to visit periodically and is a sweetie. If I could get one in the mail to her it'd be great. Can you help me?

Thanks, Lennie

Lennie, I believe the Home Sewing Association website has the turban towel instructions. The link is www.sewing.org. Hope this helps.

Here are a couple of links to instructions for fabric bowls.

http://www.junetailor.com/Creativity%20Center/CreativityCenter_ProjectSheets_SpringIntoSummer_Fa bricBowl.htm

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_quilting_instructions/article/0,17http://www.junetailor.com/Creativity%20Center/CreativityCenter_ProjectSheets_SpringIntoSummer_Fa bricBowl.htm89,HGTV_3302_2758344,00.html

The first one requires some type of template, but I think you can get the idea from the picture.

I loved making the fabric bowls. I also used the extra heavy weight double sided fusible interfacing. They do take a lot of thread, but I used up left over thread I had from other projects. I made some fabric bowls last Halloween and again at Easter. I was thinking about making Christmas ones this year (to use up some of my Christmas stash!) and fill with candy to give to my co-workers.
