Sew, What's Up

Sew What’s Up Presents

The Sew What’s New Archive

This archived content is from Mary Wilkins’ sewing and quilting message board “Sew What’s New,” which was retired in August 2007. It is being provided by “Sew What’s Up,” which serves as the new home for many members of “Sew What’s New.”

This will be announced in the newsletter today as well as here.

Sew Whats New will be closing its doors in approximately two weeks time. I have finally made the decision. It is not easy to post this, I know many of you consider this your home on the internet. My life dictates that I do other things and move forward with my interests. Hubby and I dabble in real estate. This is one area I will be more active in.

The site may be gone but never forgotten. If you have things you would like to print off of here, now is the time to do it. I know this is a big surprise for all of you, believe me it was not an easy decision to make.

Me too. I'm so sad to hear that, but wish you well Mary. Thank you so much for all the years I've had on these boards. I will really miss it. It's been a daily part of my life for over 7 years.
Will you be able to give us a date when they will shut down? I want to make sure I have all the addresses or emails of the great friends I've met here.
Any chance you might be selling the site to someone?
Sad in Alabama.

I'm also stunned! However, if this is what you feel you must do, Mary, then I also wish you the very best in your other endeavors. Thank you for all your hard work!
I will miss this site when it's gone.

I am so so sad to hear this news. But I understand, I wish you well Mary! Thank you for everything you've done here. I run a small message board and understand the time commitment it requires, this website takes a lot more time I'm sure.

I've learned so much at this website, I've lurked on other sewing sites, but this is the one I did consider my sewing "home" online. Someone asked if you were going to consider selling the site to someone else, I think that would be an awesome idea!

I have read this 4 times now trying to think of what to say.
Mary I wish you well & thank you for giving us this site for so long! I feel as close to some people on this site as I do to some of my family. Has anyone considered starting a Yahoo group. We have one for our family & you need to be accepted or invited into it. All you need to join or start it is a Yahoo address & they are free. I will look into it If anyone else is interested PM me your e mail & I will get back to you. Mary I would love to have you join too. You are part of this family. Let me know what you think. I am not super computer literate but I don't want to lose my friends.

I too understand & wish you the very best. I can't explain how sad I am the the site will no longer be. It's not only helped me but I've enjoyed it so much & feel it's an extended family as everyone is so helpfull & nice. Hey, we even get a little testy at times but we're still there for each other just like any family. There is no other sewing site like this one. Not trying to make you feel bad at all just saying this one has been A#1.You will never be forgotten Mary. Thank you for everything you have done & been to all of us.

Ohhhh Mary! This makes me so sad, but I do understand and also wish to thank you for the countless hours I've spent reading and posting with my friends and family on this board the past I think 5 or 6 years and wish you the best of luck in your real estate and all other endeavors. You deserve the very best that life has to offer. This is where I learned to quilt and I will never forget Sew-Whats-New.

I'm just a little emotional. Thanks for the advance notice. Thanks for everything, Mary.

I know I've only been here a short time (1 year) compared to most but you have to admit I'm here a lot and that's because I love it here. For me it's been the perfect way to hang out with friends. Believe it or not, I'm not a real social person. I prefer my privacy and to be alone. A board like this enables a person like me to reach out on my own terms and that's what makes it so appealing. I've known I can always come here when I need a little information, support or just plain fun and conversation. No man (or woman) is an island, after all.

Please, please let's find a way to keep together. Sounds like Barb might be the new "Mary". That would be wonderful.

Thanks, Mary, and good luck to you. Totally understandable. It must be a lot of work and dealing with the "dirty" side of maintaining a site is bound to get old after a while.

I have been pouting about this since I read the post this morning.

I understand you have other things to take care of Mary. I am glad I had the opportunity to meet all of you and share all of our stories, questions, troubles, praises, and what not. I will miss this forum very much. Even though I don't know you guys personally, I have grown very fond of each and every one of you.

Mary, thanks for everything you have done. I can't express in words what this site has done for me.

I have found another site, which I highly doubt it will be as good as this one. It's called Sewing Mamas.
I also would like to join the new yahoo group.

Best of luck to all of you.

Mary, I can appreciate your decision, but like others, I will miss you all. Thank you everyone and especially you Mary - what an incredible job you have done.

I have to dismantle my computer for awhile - painters coming through the door. I have saved the messages about new discussion lists, but please note Mary said we have a few weeks so PLEASE KEEP POSTING HERE for as long as possible. Some of the threads are invaluable. Must run and save some of the info.

Mary, will the past threads be available once you have shut list down? I am not a computer wizard, but it seems to me that once something is 'out there' it never disappears. Computer wizards? :bolt:

Hugs to all

I never saw this one coming.

Mary, you have touched the hearts of so many people here, you helped us to come together and develop some great friendship. We have laughed, cried, fought, sewn, helped one another, all because of your kind soul.
Sure there are a few other sewing sites and I sure that many of us will use them just so we can touch base with each other, but it won't be this one, the one we have had the privilege to call home for so many years now.
Thank you from my heart for allowing us to know you and your family, best wishes on your new journey.

Mary, I wish you all the best, and I'll try really hard not to pout.

I've already sent my regrets to Mary via personal mail but I'm so sad to see us "fall apart". I've made such good friends over the years...I can't imagine that I won't have a handy place to find Cajun recipes or "rib" Dorothy! My, it is a very sad day. I hope that we'll be able to stay together in some fashion because we are a great group together.

Mary's site has been my very favorite sewing site on the Web...it is going to be sooooooooo MISSED!!! I'm sorry to see this happen, but I guess as all things in life, things change and we must move on. Wishing all of you only the best and hopefully we'll reassemble in another site real close by!!!!

Thanks, Mary for all you hard work and special effort over the years. Mary, as you go about your real estate business, you might consider opening a retirement home for seamstresses...be sure and send out notices so we can pack our machines and fabric!!!!! Just think of of the great Stitch n B***** sessions we could have. Of course, the fabric storage would have to be three times the size of the home!!

Thank you Mary for all you do. I know sometimes you didn't feel like we appreciated you but that's not the case, without you and your hard work some of us would have been in a bad way during trying times. You have brought sunshine into my life in some of my darkest days because you had a place for me to go and just release all the tensions of a particular problem I was going through at that time. I know you will be there still with the newsletters and you will be able to enjoy life without baud bands being overloaded and such but we will miss this site because of the sisterhood/brotherhood it has been for us.

I hope you enjoy your freedom and hope you and your husband a very leisure happy life. (((((((Hugs)))))))) Susie

Good luck Mary, and thank you for everything you have done for all of us.

This is a total bummer, but we will all have to find a positive out of this.......just not today  We really will have to find another way to all stay together. Even though I disappear for awhile, I still feel like you are all family. The kind of family I am very happy to admit to owning.... not like most of my real relatives.
Cheers, Soph.

I will miss this site and all the friendly "characters" that I have met. I'm amazed how easily it was for everyone to become a part of my cyber life. I will miss having my daily SWN fix but I know that we all will continue on some how...and maybe I'll actually get more quilting done...as I won't be spending so much time catching up on the boards!

Mary, I tend not to post in the touchy-feely areas of the boards, but that doesn't mean I'm not paying attention. It is a very good thing that you have established, this online community of people who care about each other as much as they care about their common craft. It's something special, and it's no wonder there has been such abuzz of energy around here since your announcement. I'm so happy that your change of direction is for good reasons. May you enjoy your new endeavors.

Like everyone else I'm in total shock. I keep reading thinking, OK, it's not April Fools, this isn't a joke, and I'm almost in tears. I realize that you need to do what you need to do Mary, and I wish you the absolute best in whatever you choose to do or go. Maybe someday when I get to visit my sister in Mahone Bay we can look you up and have a coffee. You and this site will be missed more than words can say, like the others I have felt so at home here, and have made so many cyber friends. I can't imagine a day without SWN. But life goes on, I'll be watching for the new group starting up. But man, am I ever going to miss you and SWN! Best wishes Mary!!

Wow Mary, I'm so sorry to hear the site will be gone but I wish you luck in whatever you do! I know the problems you've had with the site lately and can understand the need to move on. I have always felt like this was my home away from home and all of you are family. I know some new sites are opening up which I'll join but somehow I don't think it will be the same.

Thanks for all your hard work, Mary! And good luck in the future!

I'll miss everyone here as I regard you all as friends, you're all so caring, I think this is the nicest site ever. I hope we can all get together somewhere else but wherever that will be please give detailed instructions on getting there as for me, my computer skills leave a lot to be desired!

I might have been the first to see but till now had the shortest post. I was absolutely stunned to hear your announcement Mary. I still am but at least with the consolation of knowing that I won't be losing touch with the lovely people here it has softened the blow.

You have been a most gracious hostess to us all - we probably aren't always as appreciative as we should have been (or maybe not vocal enough about it) but I for one definitely understand how lucky we all are to have shared in this community. It is made up of many different people but could not have bloomed into the place it is now without your influence, encouragement and plain hard work.

I wish you all the best with whatever your future holds - and hope that in some form you keep in touch with us (wherever we end up) when you can bear to hear of us again.

Thank you so so much for all you've done for us and for the site - there are other places we can go - but this is a special site indeed.

I am still speechless !!! I came home from the eye Dr. on Tuesday needing consolation with my Macular Degeneration Diagnosis.. (not the end of the world , at all but still shocking) and got an even greater shock when I read Mary's message.. I have to admit I sat here and cried so hard I had to log off, because I could not read anything for the tears.. I finally got signed onto the Yahoo new site, but Yahoo drives me crazy...Mary has been so great for all these years and I know she deserves some rest from all this hassle, but...... what are we going to do without our daily fix of conversation with all of our 'best friends' ??? Mary , we love you to pieces and really appreciate all you have done for us.. I think I have been on here 5 years.. I would hate to have to speculate about what I have learned in all that time.. Have to get off, or the tears will come back..

Libby, I feel the same as you do about Yahoo. Their set up is lousy but I guess we have been spoiled with Mary & how she set hers up so great. I do belong to a couple sites on Yahoo but don't go on too much. I also don't like it that all conversations come over my e-mail site. I know you can have less but don't care for that either. Sorry if I sound like a grump, really I'm not. I just hate to lose track of all the people from Mary's site so I won't.
I'll most likely lurk more than anything. I am glad we all want to stay together though.

Mary, I'm so sorry to hear that you're leaving. I have been reading all the posts here for quite some time and had just begun to post. This site has been one of my favorite places to come visit, especially recently when I've been going through some rough patches in my life. I will miss this but I want to say Thank You, Mary for all you have done to make this such a friendly forum and I wish you well in all your future pursuits. I hope we can find another place to keep everyone together.

As Barb said-- we are all over at the new forum. It's not exactly home but it's getting there.
It is not an established forum that we are moving in on and taking over. It's just us so far -- so come on over!

I've been in shock. My heart sank the day I read the news. Thank you Mary for the wonderful site and all your work to keep it so. I know it is not the end of the world but it is still pretty sad for me. Quite honestly, I just don't have any sewing friends here 'in the flesh'. I'm sure the new sites will be great, and I'm so glad people are so much more computer literate than I am to set it up. Hope to see all of you there.
Thanks again Mary.

As I have told Mary in an email, life is too short and time is precious. Therefore it should be spent on things that give us pleasure. We appreciate ALL that Mary has done and I will not forget the friends I have made over the years. We all have a common goal - keeping sewing alive for future generations.

I have been very appreciative of this site. Of all the ones that I'd seen on the internet this one is the most attractive, most functional and has the most helpful people.

I'm sad to see this site leaving and almost wish that someone else could host it for a while.

However, I understand the need to focus on other areas in life. Thank you for creating such a wonderful site. I wish you well in your endeavors.

This has been more like family where you are all agreed on disagreeing. Which means it's OK to disagree or have a different slant on things without being censured for it!

I've enjoyed the site because the emphasis has always been on the type of sewing I do. There are so many quilting sites and embroidery sties, but few with so may seamstresses which do my type of sewing. It has been so much fun!

Blimey. I go on holiday and look what happens!

Thanks Mary, you have been an inspiration in many ways, keeping this lot under control must have been like herding cats.

SWN has been responsible for my returning to garment sewing after many years, for developing and challenging my imagination, for learning new and innovative techniques.

It has been a place to yell frustrations, crow triumphs and hold each other during times of great pain.

It takes a great woman to hold all that together. Thank you for many years of companionship and I hope you have a great time in your new line of activity. I still want to see links to photos of your garment sewing and expect those in the newsletter.

You are a star. xxx
