Hi. I've just found this site and am desperately hoping someone here can give me some guidance.

I presently have a basic Kenmore home sewing machine, which has done what I needed it to do up to this point. However, I'm now looking into making dog collars as a side business and have everything required EXCEPT the sewing machine. I honestly didn't think it was going to be this difficult to find a suitable machine.

I plan to use #69 bonded nylon thread and heavier duty nylon webbing (suitable for large breed dogs). I will need to sew through doubled up nylon webbing and that seems to be the problem. I plan to make a few different types of collars, the largest being a MAXIMUM thickness of 1/3" when doubled.

I don't care if I have the newest, latest, greatest machine. That doesn't matter to me and I would even buy a used machine if I could find one to do the job. My husband isn't wild about the industrial machines with a separate motor and table, etc. Someone suggested that a heavy duty machine is not good enough and I need a post bed sewing machine and someone else said I should expect to pay upwards of $2000.

Do any of you have any advice, experience, suggestions, etc., to give me? I'd REALLY appreciate it!! Are there any home, heavy duty or industrial machines or that would accommodate 1/3" thickness?

Thanks so much for any and all advice!

Connie

I don't think you will receive satisfactory results over the long run with any family machine. If you HAVE to go that way, a Pfaff with Dual Feed or a Janome 6600 with built-in walking foot would be the only possibilities I can think of. What you really need is an upholstery machine with compound feed, something that can handle a size 20 needle and your 69 nylon thread. A Singer 111W155 is a good choice, and there are identical machines made by Consew, Juki, Pfaff, and others.
