Just wondering what crafts everyone enjoys. I really like my crewel work and find it is very relaxing. I buy the kits with yarns inside. They are expensive, but usually turn out really nice. I am presently doing a nice oval Welcome sign for the front foyer.

Mary, I would love to learn how to do crewel work. I always look at those kits at Michaels, and want to buy one, but don't know of anyone who can teach me. Do you make house-calls?? You could come down here, enjoy warm sunshine, the beaches and the casinos, I would get free lessons! Nance

Nance, don't tempt me. LOL

Crewel work is simply an array of embroidery stitches done with wool. The colour shadings are very subtle sometimes, and this gives it a very rich, deep appearance.

If you can do simple outline stitch, satin stitch and french knots, you can do crewel.
Definitely not brain surgery. If I can do it, you can too. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

I'm not one for doing many crafts but I do like embroidery and crewel work when I have a chance to work on it. My favorite hobby outside of sewing is photography. I like scenic shots more than people shots. Even won a blue ribbon once for a photo of water rushing over rocks (not exactly a waterfall). It was so clear that you could see the minnows in the reflections of the water. I used to knit and crochet but have forgotten how to do it. Happy Stitching!

A craft that I am going to try to do this year, is gourd craft. My MIL sent us some birdhouse gourds and DH cut them and hung them in the yard. I decided I wanted to grow some gourds and try my hand at gourd crafts this year. I have the gourds planted, we will see if I get anything to grow. I also bought a book on gourd crafts. There are some beautiful things in that book. Nance

I spent a couple hours at a local saddlery shop on Saturday. They sell kits for making leather ankle booties. I used to do that years ago when we still had Tandy Leathers in town. They were out of kits but they guy said they should have more in about 2 weeks. I took home their catalog and was looking in it and saw they also sell a pattern for making the booties from scratch. I called the shop to ask about it and he said they're out of the pattern at this time, too, but it should be in stock again in a couple weeks. I think I might buy a kit, and also the pattern when they become available to me.

Nance....a word to the wise! I don't know if your gourd craft books tell you how to dry the gourds but DON'T dry them in your house or basement...They will stink awful! I dry mine over the winter in our barn on pallets after first rinsing them in a solution of bleach and water. I always lose a few to rot but then I grow a lot! Also....when growing them...best to grow them on a frame of some sort and make it VERY sturdy. Gourds are heavy. Another tip....had a friend grow gourds and before they were dry she threw them out because they had mold on them.....they are SUPPOSED to have mold on them..that is what gets cleaned off when they are dry and makes the beautiful patterns. Only throw out the ones that get soft. You probably already know all of this and if so...just ignore my ramblings! LOLOL

Sharon, thanks for the advice. No I did not know these things. It is nice to know that I will have someone to come to if I need advice. The gourd craft book mainly just shows neat projects to make, it does not have any info on raising them. What sort of gourds do you grow? Nance

Nance, I grow both crookneck and bushel basket gourds. The crook neck is what people use for birdhouses but I've not made any birdhouses yet. The bushel basket the small bushel basket make nice round gourds and you can make all kinds of neat things with those.
If you can't find seed for those, look online ...we get ours from a seed supply place where we buy our seed for the farm and they usually have to order the seeds for me.
If you type in gourds in a search engine you will find lots of information on growing, drying, decorating gourds......Have fun! And yes I will be glad to help if I can.

Now this sounds cute.

Make a small bag about 3 inches square stuff it and tie the top with
ribbon. the poem that goes with it is as follows:

This is a very special gift
That you can never see
The reason it's so special is
It's just for you from me.

Whenever you are lonely
Or are ever feeling blue
You only have to hold this little gift
And know I'm hugging you.

You never can unwrap it
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the bag close to your heart
It's filled with hugs inside.

Thanks for the instructions for the Bag of Hugs. What a wonderful idea. I want to make one for each of my two nine yr. old GDs. I know they will treasure them!

Aside from my passion of sewing, I love to crochet, especially thread crochet....the finer the thread, the more I like it. I also enjoy cross stitch but it takes forever to finish something...probably why I have so many on the go at one time.

This summer, I want to teach my girls to quilt so that will become another passion...

Sims,I would love to see some of your crochet. My SIL does it as well, the finer the better. Such beautiful work.

Marion, those bags sound so cute. I think they would go nice along with anything in a gift basket or stocking at Christmas.

Hi!

I love that bag of hugs, that should go on the website under projects, maybe with a photo of one done up with ribbons and lace. I would fill it with dried rose petals, along with the stuffing, so it smells really great.

I like yarn crochet, sewing, and right now I'm learning one stroke painting, which is a form of decorative painting.

I also like making home made Christmas decorations. I've done all kinds of crafts, the list would go on and on, but those are the ones that I'm into right now.

Who's next?

Loved the hugs poem.

I used to do a lot of hand embroidery at night while watching TV but, I just don't find it fun since I've learned to FME. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif I really enjoy applique so now when I'm not sewing I am usually tracing Sunbonnet Sue and Sam on WonderUnder to applique.

I have tons of patterns of Sunbonnet Sue and Sam, if anyone would like them.

Mary,
I think the hug bag is precious. What a nice idea to give to someone who is down.

I just started doing some canvas painting this year, and love it. Just finished painting a victorian centre piece for my table. The thing I like about it is you can just wipe them down when they get dirty. They are protected with a couple coats of varnish and won't stain, at least so far. I have seen area rugs made the same way, and hope to try one sometime.

I have done many crafts since retiring in 2000,wreaths, christmas tree skirts, stockings, towels but really got into making doll clothes last year for 18"dolls and love doing the craft shows. I have met so many interesting people and have made many friends in the past two years.

Hi everyone, haven't been on here for a while. I have photos of some of the decorative painting I've been doing, and also a few of my portraits at

http://ca.photos.yahoo.com/blackstonecat

or if you prefer to see them at picturetrail there is a small sampling here http://www.picturetrail.com/blackstonecat

and a few of the things I sewed for my daguther can be seen at http://ca.photos.yahoo.com/lassierose

This only shows things I happen to have photos of, most of the sewing I did for her was never photographed. I also did dolls and puppets of all kinds too, but don't have photos.

I took photos of some paintings I did, plus some crafts, but then I lost the film! I just haven't had time to retake the photos.

Does anyone else have anything up on the internet?

When I was younger I did ceramics, cross stitch embroidery, and just before I started quilting I tried my hand at carpentary. I would love to go back to ceramics. But first I'll finish all my UFP's and make quilts for everybody in my family.

Emmy,
Your decorative painting is beautiful. I love the baskets. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif
I started painting murals on my guest bathroom walls. So far I've painted a birdhouse on a post with trailing ivy, and a ficus tree in an urn. I'm not quite finished with the tree yet. It's only half full of leaves so far, but I'm having alot of fun with it when I find the time.
I used to do alot of tole painting, but kind of got away from it when I found quilting. We moved in a new house and I figured this would be a much cheaper way to decorate than buying so many pictures for the walls. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif
I have plans to paint all the walls in that bathroom, some vines around the upper wall in the master bath, and fruit vines around the windows and doors in my kitchen.

Adva, I tried ceramics as a teenager when my mom worked in a ceramic shop. It was fun.

Depending on the scale of the house. My quilt blocks for the tops are about 1/4" square. The christmas tree skirt is another story lol

Emmy,
Love your painting. There is a tole painting course coming in this area in November that I plan on taking. I hope I can get as good as you. I have done a bit on canvas and a few of us are practising the Donna Dewberry strokes, but I have a way to go yet. I do enjoy painting though.
A friend of a friend of mine just taught us how to do the equalateral triangle(hope I spelt it right). Beautiful design. Sorry just changed the topic here.

Shirley, you will need fabric to scale so if you email me with your address I will send you a few little squares to work with as it is difficult when not using the right size print. You can do a small 3 patch to start. You will need tweezers, toothpick and fabric glue to set your fabric before sewing. Each little block is cut to 1/2". Once you get the fabrics we can then work on one at a time on this board here and get you set up with a few things for the house. I design alot of my own as you know minatures in canada are out of this world. Have pattern for a canopy bed too if you like lol

Mary: We can always assume that Jo thinks very, very small; or, if she is very, very small that toothpicks look like logs to her; or, she plays pick-up-sticks with toothpicks and tweezers. Or, Jo can think that you and I need another project to get started on so we don't have time to pick on her? Oops!! Here comes the quilting assignment from *&*&* again! Oh yeah Jo! I'm one of those people that have been very careful what they pray for and I especially have never prayed to be given patience! Just ask my DH. He'll tell you how much "patience" I have with a lot of things, except my quilting and sewing -- but, of course, those things belong to another entirely different world.

I watched a sister and brother-in-law almost end up in divorce court one Christmas Eve putting a doll house together. Geez I thought we would never get that house together and decorated in time for Santa.

Now there's a good topic Mary. The most memorable toys you and your spouse have put together on Christmas Eve. I'll bet we'd get some interesting posts out of that one. lol

Way ahead of you ladies. Just picked up iron on transfers at Wally World to start on SIL a wall hanging. It's the Flowers for Everyday patterns and I'm doing them in turquoise as that is one of her favorite colors and her dining room and kitchen are done in the turqoise accents. Same as redwork, bluework, blackwork, etc., except this will be turquoise work. There are 7 of them so that should keep me busy for a few days, anyway. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif

Joanne,
Your doll houses are gorgeous. Did you make the house itself or buy it? Can you buy plans for these? There ladies, make all the fun you want about little people, these are great. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/tongue.gif

Hey Patsy the question was:

"what crafts do you enjoy?"

I mean I am a "crafty person" http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/wink.gif and then some

Henceforth, right now I would not mind a sailing craft riding the waves over.. landing on a beach that is out there and slapping my name up onto the sand.. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/cool.gif Can you picture it?? http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif OK..

I will shove off in my little Lincoln log canoe.. only to head down-stream and get the kids a fish meal http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/confused.gif

Sorry Mary.. I had to do it.. my inner self made me do it!! blame it on HER --->

Hey Jo, I'm happy. Happy that you taught me to quilt, however, I do worry about how to get all my projects done! http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif Let's see, I now have 2 demos for machine applique to prepare for; a maid of honor dress to alter; 2 baby gifts to do; 3 snowman sweatshirts to make for Christmas; a set of snowman table linens to make; 3 pairs of lounging pants for my mother; 5 snowman blocks to finish; miscellaneous mending and altering for a friend who is being given a trip to Hawaii for her 75th birthday. I think I need more hours in my day or night or somewhere! LOL

P.S. I love your doll houses. Wanta make me one to decorate and play with in my spare time?

Patsy

I started painting murals on my guest bathroom walls. So far I've painted a birdhouse on a post with trailing ivy, and a ficus tree in an urn....I have plans to paint all the walls in that bathroom, some vines around the upper wall in the master bath, and fruit vines around the windows and doors in my kitchen.

Hi Bama,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I haven't had a chance to come back to this site for ages. Been a lot going on, and I've been ill.

Your wall painting sounds great! Are you doing One Stroke or Tole? I plan to do some in my home too, but I have to repaint the kitchen first. Do you have any of your work posted on the net anywhere? There are some great One Stroke and Tole groups at yahoo if your interested.

How is your project going? You must be done the ficus tree by now.

Hugs

Would you be interested in sharing the pattern for the shrug, they are really handy when you go out somewhere. I could post it on the site. I really would like to hear from you. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Mary! http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

My little girl is all grown up now! I wish I'd taken more photos of the things I made for her, puppets, dolls, toys, clothes and accesories, but I just didn't think of it while she was growing up. I have a few more pictures around but haven't had time to scan much.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner about the shrug. I've been ill and so busy, haven't had time to check the boards for ages.

Yes, you can use my shrug pattern. I will forward that to you by email, at the websites email address. Let me know if you get it all right.

Hugs

Love your painting. There is a tole painting course coming in this area in November that I plan on taking. I hope I can get as good as you. I have done a bit on canvas and a few of us are practising the Donna Dewberry strokes, but I have a way to go yet. I do enjoy painting though.
Shirley

Hi Shirley,

Thank you! If you are interested in Donna Dewberry's One Stoke method, there are some great groups at Yahoo, where we discuss all sorts of things related to it. I love it. Let me know if you're interested in the links.

Hi Bama and Shirley, if you are interested in getting in touch with other painters, the OneStroke yahoo groups are:

<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1StrokePaint-talk/>

<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/onestroke_painting/>

<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/onestrokeholidays>

TOLE <http://tolefriends.com/>

There are others, but these are the most active ones. I'm sure you would find them helpful. If you join, say hi to me there. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif Mention Middle Age Spread, so I'll know who's posting.

Its free to join all of them. There are some terrific websites out there too with free patterns to paint. If you get stuck with something, there is usually someone on one of the groups that can make a helpful suggestion.

Hugs
Emmy http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif
