For those of us just beginning this phase...I know hot flashes are the most uncomfortable and unpleasant. But there is a good side...I'm saving on razor blades since the leg hair is slowing down. Gee, it's nice to keep 5:00 shadow at bay for a little longer...I was beginning to think I should own stock in the Gillette Razor Blade company! http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/wink.gifKim

I think the best part will be if I ever finish up with the monthly menstruation.(sp?)

Memory loss and hot flashes make me crazy. Some get really moody, I get impatient!

Hot flashes are the worst.

The best: I always got bad pms and bad cramps. Also pain when I ovulated. There were times I hated being female, now I love it.

I am one of the few who stopped menstrauting at 40 and only had minor hot flashes, I think it had something to do with starting early, only 10 1/2, but I sure don't miss any part of it. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

I always wanted a hysterectomy because I just didn't want to deal with it. Doctors couldn't come up with a good reason to give me one.

Since my teens it was always just a BAD time for me. I'd be in so much pain I'd vomit for a day or two each month. It got better after I had my son, but it was never a good thing to me.

I had a hystrectomy 9 years ago, when I was 35. It's the best thing that ever happened to me. I take hormones (not the contravertial ones) to compensate for a number of things. I have hot flashes every once in a while though, and they suck. Getting older, in general, suck.

I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 31...I don't miss the plumbing one bit. It's hard dealing with symptoms out of nowhere though. The hot flashes are occasional bouts that last for a few weeks or so, then stop. The leg hair thing is a pleasant side effect...I'm sick of shaving! http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gifKim

Bama.... I really do not know when it really starts http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif I think that this is different for all involved. I starting my bout with it about 6 years ago (I was 49).. It took me some time to agree to the HRT.. and when we finally got it working for me.. then I had cholesterol problems, then the male doc changed my precrips (5 months ago), I am having the worse bother with what is known as the "power surges"..

I have had flashes.. but nothing like I am having now... an example... the flash is NOT done and over in minutes.. It is a fever type effect.. I could be in the grocery store..in the section that is nice and cool.. all of a sudden I feel as if I am on fire... My face will get red.. I will have a clammy sweat.. I will stand there to try to regroup and proceed with what I was doing.. BUT it will stay with me for about 3-4 hours. Since moving to the States during this past month, I need to find a GYN to sort things out... My doctor in Ontario set me up on "the patch" !! It is not helping me at all http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif

I am going thru bouts of depression.. I am upset because I was never like this at all.. I was able to think clearly and in a positive manner.. Now.. No No.. Like I said it is different for everyone.. It just so happens I need the HRT, where some do not..

A wonderful way to go thru this different way is having a person that supports you.. I need to find that person http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif

Karebear,
We can support each other. I started a couple years ago and am a total mess. I don't when I'm going to have a normal day or not. I can cry all day and then laugh like an idiot the next. I don't have the fashes but I also feel as if I am having fevers. Once in a while I feel as if I'm normal, but that if few and far between. Can't wait till this is over. I heard that when you are done you have energy again. Is this right? Can't wait to find out.

Strated pre-m.... at 39-40 with very mild symptoms and it is still very mild and I sure hope it stays like this. I modified my diet to include more soya and natural food STUFF and got back into exercising not too long ago. It does help. Karebear, find a good doctor; I hope you are not having side effects to whatever prescriptions of patch (or other) you are on. Sometimes the medication does not make things better.

I'm 36. In the last year or so, some nights I wake up burning up. Not just warm, but very uncomfortable. I have to kick the covers off, and it takes a while before I'm comfortable again. Could this be the start of hot flashes? It only happens after I've been sleeping for a while. Never in the day time.

Bama, lately there's been a lot of yap about "perimenopause." Seems that menopause doesn't necessarily come on you all at once, like a bolt of lightning--or a skillet to your head--but can sneak up gradually. Nowadays, quite a few medical folks think that it's a gradual process, as the reproductive system begins slowing down. Makes sense, I think; few human functions turn on and off exactly like a light switch.

What you're experiencing could be a perimenopausal thing. It's funny--when I have hot flashes, I tend also to have the majority of them at night.

Thanks Shirley for the "support" hug.... I know that I have fellow friends on this forum to group with..

Elona's advice to Bama "What you're experiencing could be a perimenopausal thing. It's funny--when I have hot flashes, I tend also to have the majority of them at night." sounds right on to me. If I went into a "peri- men" anything, it came in like a kitten & is still doing the LION thing http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif

It is very different for everyone. I know of some women that nothing changes.. !!! period was over and they laughed http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif That is great..

I have some days that I wonder and ask myself "why were you so un-nice to your mother when she was going thru this thing called the "change"??? http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/frown.gif

The Italian cousins are all emailing each other now and trying to get a confession out of the others by asking "Ok.. were you the first one to say your mother was doing that "crazy" **Ronzo thing???

** Ronzo was the family name on that crazy side http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif

This is for Bama and Elona and any others who need the info...We always called what you're talking about 'night sweats' and yes, it was part of menopause.. Some friends of mine had them so bad, they would have to change the bed as well as their gowns. I was one of the lucky ones who never realized that I was going thru menopause.. I am now 68 and I only remember 5 or 6 hot flashes and none of them were bad.. I had a friend who would turn beet red and water would pour off her for 15 or 20 minutes.. She really suffered about 18 months like that.. Just hope you have a light case of symptoms .. (all of you, included )

Bama, that's what I get...sometimes I sweat and sometimes I don't. But I always feel like my skin is on fire. And I never know when I'll get them. And boy, is it extra miserable on a hot summer night! I had to put a fan on me at night even with the air conditioner on. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

I just heard about a herbal pill that it totally natural. It comes from the mediteranian. It is suppose to be a 75 yr old remedy that the europeons have used for years. Apparently it is for cleansing and can help many symptons of menopause as well. Has anyone heard of it, and is it any good?

When I mentioned to hubby once that maybe I was having a hot flash, he thought I was crazy and said, "You're only 36." I guess most people think you have to be closer to 50.
And come to think of it, the PMS is alot worse than it was when I was younger.

Here is a site you ladies might be interested in. http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/tows_2002/tows_past_20020206.jhtml

Can't say that I can complain as I guess I didn't have much time to dwell on change of life happenings. I think it happened and other than hot flashes (especially at night) I sailed right through it. However, dh still complains that our house is like a "meat locker" at night and the I'm always hot and he's always cold routine in the house and car. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif

That's interesting, Patsy. The hot/cold thing is usually the other way around...men with no shirt and women with two+ sweaters. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/smile.gif

Men will have to learn to either give in, or just get out of the way? http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/wink.gif

Has anyone ever watched '7th Heaven'? My daughter loves that show, so I usually watch it with her. Last year the Mom/Wife character was going through menopause. It was quite funny at times.

In my experience, most couples where the women have already or are going through menopause thing seem to have the same situation that dh and I have with the hot/cold thing. The men complain about freezing because the women are suffering with hot flashes.

Hey Patsy, maybe my husband and I will finally agree on how to set the thermostat. He always finds it too hot, even in winter.

I'm not sure if I have started that phase or not. I haven't had hot flashes with sweating, but there are times when I feel as though I have a fever. The thermometer tells me that I don't. I feel like my insides are burning, but really have no other symptoms. Weird.

My mother became pregnant when she was going through 'the change'. She thought she was finished with all that stuff, but nope.

When I stated with all this about 8 years ago, I was having night sweats and hot flashes, and migraines and dizzy spells. The Dr. recommended a low dose birth control pill for the night sweats and hot flashes, and Anaprox for the dizzy spells and migraines. I told him if he would take care of the migraines and the dizzy spells, I could live with the other two. Well, the Anaprox works, and I have lived thru the night sweats and hot flashes. Some months they are worse than others but I can deal with it. Now I wear sandals most of the year because I found that closed in shoes made the hot flashes worse. Everyone at school complained that I kept my classroom like a meat locker. Now its not so bad. Every once in a while some one will ask me why my face is so red, but I just shrug and go on about my business.

Peggy.. first off, I need to know where you live... I was sitting here laughing about wearing sandals at work, while there is a foot of snow outside (I have done that very same thing) http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/biggrin.gif Of course, at the U of Waterloo.. the asian students did the very same thing.. but I guess I was more intrigued by the fact that YOU have control over the "koolness" in your classroom. there are not too many places that teachers have that control...

BTW.. spoke with a friend yesterday.. she is 39 yrs old.. and she is going thru menopause!!! Her doc did some tests and found that the production of estrogen is NIL.. she never had children.. and commented that her "clock" is done... I should let her know about what happened to your mother, Donna... http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/eek.gif

Oh no...I can't stand shoes either! I swear they make me feel much hotter...so it's flip flops in the summer, shoes in the winter only when I'm going out. Otherwise, it's slippers or moccasins all day long...until I slip my feet out to curl up in a chair.

The worst thing about menopause is not knowing when its finally going to end. I started early, in my thirties, had over 10 years of severe and sometimes life threatening flooding. Had to have surgery twice for it, but things have been a little better this past year, no real periods at all...until this past couple of months. The hot flashes started up again, have PMS worse than ever, crying jags, feel blue all the time, tired and can't sleep, and my periods have started up again! GRRRRRR! I am SO disgusted!

I thought I was nearly finished with all this nonsense!

I have just begun the menopause phase. The leg hair slow-down IS GREAT!! As is the lack of periods. Am experiencing hot flashes at night. The day time ones seem to come during times of stress. Tight fitting, closed shoes have always made me feel too warm ---NOW----PHEW!!!! I have converted many sweatshirts to 'sweaters' for ease of removal should the need arise!! I am experimenting with a cream form of Progesterin. It really seems to help. Dr. John Lee has done many studies on Menopause and related female things. His book: What Your Doctor Won't Tell You about Menopause has been very helpful to me. I don't remember his web address but if you search Progesterin you will find it. Thanks, gals for the sharing. It helps to know that we are not alone ---- Though, in this, I think we all agree that we'd just as soon not have to deal with it!!!! God strengthen us all!

Okay ladies -- here's a new idea for those of you suffering with hot flashes and sleeplessness. One of the female attorneys I work for here at my office was having the same problems (she is now the big 50) went to a female doctor who specializes in natural remedies for menopause and the doctor prescribed Prometrium (it is a hormone but an all natural substance -- no synthetic hormones as she is like I am and refuses to take synthetic hormones) and she is feeling 100% better. So, you girls may want to ask your docs about it. It can also be compounded into a cream form. She took the pills because our healthcare insurance doesn't cover the cream.

I'm embarrassed! It is Progesterone - not progesterin. It is manufactured by: Sarati Intn't., Inc., Los Fresnos, TX 78566. They carry other 'rebalancing' products, including the kits with which you can test your hormone levels (you have to send the kit in to their labs for analasis). As the Dr. explained, when women reach the non-reproductive years, hormone levels drop. ALL hormone levels----NOT JUST Estrogen. And not the same way in every woman. We all need the correct balance for our body. (That's why have so much trouble getting the right dosage.) As it seems that the medical profession is WAY behind in the area of womens health, it is up to us to educate ourselves and help them to catch up. (Some will not appreciate your knowledge or the gentle 'nudge' to help them update their medical knowledge - either switch doctors - or hang in there and don't let them push you into something that doesn't work or that you don't want.) We have to be the strong ones in every other area of life - why not in the area of our health??!!!!

Hi everyone!

I haven't had time to read the posts for a bit. I noticed the post about Dr. Lee right away though, because I recommended this book to this very group, back when we had a separate website for Middle-age Spread. Just thought it funny to see someone else recommending this book right after my post. LOL!

I actually have two books by him, one on menopause and one on premenopause. Both very helpful, but the later more appropriate right now.

I've been using micronized progesterone cream for a few years now. Helps with hot flashes within minutes, and helps with many other problems too.

I was able to go off it for the past year or so, but lately am having all kinds of symptoms again and my periods and PMS are back.

Weird having periods after almost 2 years of hardly anything. I am NOT a happy camper right now. I guess the past 2 years I was so stressed out and my adrenals were so overtaxed that I didn't have a cycle most months. So now I have to go through all the hot flashes again. YUCK!

Did I say YUCK? Grrrr!

Oh well, here we go again! LOL! Life always throws you a curve ball when you least expect it.

Last week that was me! Weird thing is that I thought I was almost finished with my cycle and all of a sudden it starts up again and I'm on an emotional roller coaster, just like the character Annie.

One month I'm watching that show and laughing about the crazy moods the character is having, and feeling glad that I got through it without all that fuss, and the next I'm there.

I looked it up in one of my books and this is typical of premenopause. (Gee, thanks like I needed that!!!) Its like being a teenager all over again, only you're tired all the time too. (Actually, exhuasted would be a better word). In fact, one of my books even suggested thinking of menopause as the teen years in reverse. The turning off of the reproductive cycle, with all the hormones and yoyo feelings that you got with the teen years, because your hormones are out of whack again.

You've heard of a second childhood? Well, for women there can be a second teenage too!

LOL! I guess the joke is on us!

Only it is no joke! Yesterday was awful. The hot flashes just take over. We were out and I thought I was gonna keel over with it all.

After a bit, it subsided, but sheesh, what an awful feeling. My periods are never going to stop, I am convinced of that. I will go to my grave with a box of whatever in my purse. http://www.sew-whats-new.com/forums/wink.gif

My hubby bought me a mood ring the other day.
You know the ones that change color to reflect mood changes.

~~When I'm in a good mood it turns green.

~~When I'm in a sexy mood it turns pink.

~~When I'm in a happy mood it turns yellow.

~~When I'm in a sad mood it turns blue.

~~When I'm in a bad mood it turns black.

~~When I'm in "Pre-Menopausal" mood, it leaves a red mark on his forehead!!!

The worst thing for me is the irregular periods. I never know when or if I'm going to start -- no warning from my body or the calendar. And every time -- for the last few years -- I say "This has gotta be the last." And every time it's not.

Best part -- the excuse. I have my husband and kids convinced that stress gives me terrible hot flashes. Actually mine aren't that bad and I don't think stress has anything to do with it but whenever someone is bugging me I just say "You're giving me a hot flash." and they quit.
Cool, huh. I expect to continue the "symptoms" for at least 10 more years.

Having gone through it at age 34 and one day ( I'm 50 now) because of Endometreosis in all the plumbing, I am having more fun now watching "Hubby" go through the male version of it!!!!!!! Sometimes I just sit and hope to the "Big Guy" that I didn't/don't sound as goofey as Hubby does!!!!
At first it was very hard for me to get used to it, as we where trying for another baby, but I just could not get pregnant. Now I'm okay with the whole thing, What does bother me now are the young girls who get pregnant, just to do it!!!! They are taking for granted something that I was trying very hard to do and couldn't.

Just to be contrary, for me the best part so far in the run up, as it were, has been the staggering INCREASE in libido! DH is one happy bunny!
