I went to my grandmother's funeral yesterday. She was the last of my grandparents to pass away. She would have been 94 this friday. She lived a good life. She had 8 children, 26 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She had Alzheimer's (sp?) the last several years of her life. We had been expecting her to pass for a while now. Her youngest grandson spoke at the funeral and read Proverbs 31:10-31, about a virtuous woman. It was very appropriate for the live that she had lived. I just wanted to share. She was one of the first quilters in my life. |

If she had that many decendants her memory will live on and on. A little piece of her lives in each one of you. God be with you and your family in your time of sorrow. Susie |

Thanks ladies. I've been thinking about the quilts that I have that my grandmothers, great grandmother, and DH's grandmother made. I know who made each of them, but my children don't. I'm planning to make labels for the backs of them now. Any suggestions what information I should include? |

Bama I would definately include the last names of each quilt maker and if possible the age at death. That way maiden names can be traced if need be. Also the year born can be found out by adding the age at death. If you know when the quilt was made add that too. As much infomation as possible will be of help to a great great grandchild of yours possilbly later one day down the line. I myself don't have any way of knowing who my great grandfather or great grandmother were on either side. We are related to the frist person who settled in Louisiana and later helped the arcadians come down from Canada but how we don't have a clue. One day I will reserach this further and if I had something to go on it would be nice, like a quilt handed down from my great grandmother with her name on it. LOL This is just my thoughts. Susie |

Bama, sorry about your grandmother. It is always a difficult time for the family. We have gone thru two funerals in 5 months. The girls all gave you good advice. I would sew a block on the back and add as much info. as I could on each one. You have some very treasured comforts to pass along. MaryW

Bama, You also need to write the history of each piece as well. in the history, put everything you can remember about it.. if you were there when she made it, etc... or what your parents told you about it, if they were there.. These are the things that get lost in families.. I am in the process of doing this now, for the treasures my Grandmother made and my Mom passed on to us.. Now , Mom is gone and my brother and sister did not pay too much attention in the old days when Mom talked about these things.. Now, they are more interested, so I have to write it down for them.. Thank the Good Lord that I have a computer to save time and hand cramps... Put it in a booklet to go with each item.. also list who has posession of the actual heirlooms.. Give a copy to each branch of the family.. Sew With Love
