Hi all, newbie here.

I bought a sewing machine today (first one ever--I'm taking a quilting class, but other than the piecing we've done so far I've never done any sewing). I got it all set up and threaded, and decided to use some "practice" fabric to give myself a feel for how it works, before I start in on the "real" stuff.

Somehow, the thread on the top of my seams is being turned grey! It's 100% cotton thread, and I've used it on two other machines, so I know the thread itself isn't the problem. It looks kinda like a lot of pencil marks on the thread, if that makes any sense. The thread on the bottom isn't turning grey, just on the top. I've tried changing the needle.

Is this something that all new machines do, that will work itself out if I just give it enough stitches? (I don't have a whole lot of practice fabric!) Or is there something I need to do to make it stop? Or should I call the shop and ask them about it? (I figure if it's a dumb question, better to ask on the Internet first. ;) )

Thanks for any help you can give me...and sorry if it's a dumb question, but I really don't know what the deal is!

Sounds like it's getting machine oil on it. The oil is clear, but I've had that happen with my old machine when there's dust and thread fuzz caught in it.

Hi Amanda, welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

I think Bama is right, sounds like a little too much oil somewhere. Try stitching a few seams and see if it disappears. It may be temporary. If that doesn't work, trace back to where your thread starts to turn gray and clean that area. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, and for the welcome! :)

I stitched several seams, and it did eventually work itself out. I really appreciate your advice. Now I can finish my blocks for this week's class! :)
