Hi

I'm going to make some sheer curtains, but have a few questions.

First of all, the fabric has a pattern on it, so if I do regular double-fold hems it looks messy. Any ideas? If I do a really narrow hem, how would I weigh down the hem?

Second, does anyone have any hints for hanging the curtain using those clips you can buy?

Thanks!

You can use washers from the hardware store for weights in the corners. Wrap them in a little swatch of the sheer fabric and stitch closed. Then insert in corners.

I have seen weighted cord used in sheers
the voiles I did for my bathroom I had similar problem re the hem - the pattern allowed me to use the selvage edge untreated and I rolled hemed the sides on my serger and they look good and hang ok without the weights

I am also making sheer curtains and wondered if you can use a serged rolled hem? Some old lace sheers I "inherited" from my stepmother have what looks like a rolled hem, but when you look at them closely they appear to have a tiny bit of cording in the hem.
I also found some sheer fabric that has an extra wide, decorative selvage. Has anyone ever used a selvage in place of a hem?
I'm also interested in hanging without a casing. I hung a bit of sheer lace on a window using clothespins just to gauge whether I wanted lace on the window. I love the look, except the clothespins are purple and the room is yellow. Hmmm. Maybe I need some prettier pins.

hi Shelley,
yes I have used the selvage as the lower hem and it worked fine.
I think that if the fabric was suitable that a serged or narrow hem would work fine to and you could incorporate a cord into that.
The curtains that I made last week were patterned voile and I rolled hemed the sides . I sewd wooly nylon in the upper looper and mettler thread in the needle and lower looper I was very pleased with the results as they looked just like the ones which had been done by the professionals :bg:

Hmm, that's a new trick to me. Rolled hems for the sides. :bluesmile

Wow, thanks for all the ideas! I was wondering about the rolled hem idea.
How long were your curtains that didn't need weights, Skye? I saw some "lead" string for the bottom of curtains, but have never tried it. Could that be what is in your cutains, Shelley?

(These boards are so great:bg: )

Hi Aly,
my curtains are 1.08 metres long and I used 2x the width.
I used 4cm rufflette tape in the bathroom and 10 cm tape in the laundry so they are softly gathered. The laundry curtain I draw back 'cause I like to look out at my neigbours lovely garden:bg:

Sorry, i don't know what kind of string is in the bottom hem of my curtains. My stepmother had a vast collection of curtains that she cut, fit, fussed with and adjusted to fit every form of military housing that we ever lived in. I looked at these and could tell they'd been "adjusted" at the top and sides, but really can't tell about the bottom. Knowing her, and the strict financial planning it took to raise four kids on a Tech Sgt. salary, there is kite string, purloined from one of our bedrooms stitched into the bottom of these sheers!
They look great though. They are covering a 98" window in my family room. Saved me major money, which makes them even prettier in my book.
Has anyone ever tried encasing this stuff in a rolled hem? I'm a bit antsy about damaging my server.
