Have you ever gone away for a few days and wished you had never left home.

I went to see my SIL for a few days this past week. She lost her husband a few months ago and we had a lot of catching up to do. I found a super cheap flight and decided now was a good time to make the trip. The trip there was uneventful. My SIL was great and we talked until we were hoarse. The last day was something else. We woke up to fine weather, but inside of two hours it was a blinding snowstorm. My flight left at 4 pm so I was not alarmed. We left for the airport around 1, it was still snowing and didn't want to have any problems. A 40 minute drive ended up lasting 1 1/2 hrs. with many roads closed and cars in the ditch. The flight showed as still running, so my SIL left for home. I got in the lineup and waited for my turn for a boarding pass. When it was finally my turn, while she is issuing the pass, they cancelled the flight. There I was, stranded at a strange airport. It was still snowing, no flights going out until the next day.

I phoned my SIL back, but, of course she wasn't home yet. There were no cabs available, all stuck somewhere. Two hours later, I finally came across a shuttle taking people to local motels. I jumped on that and went to the closest motel, crossing my fingers that there was a room available.

The only room was a corner room, and the clerk said it might be a little chilly. It was up two flights of stairs, but hey, it was home for the night. I dragged my suitcase up and promptly put on more clothes. My refrigerator was warmer than that room. Brrrrr.

Anyway, I got settled and went downstairs to the restaurant. WRONG, no restaurant, no snack bar, nothing. Everyone was ordering takeout from across the street. Ok, I can do that. I called and put in my order for a nice hot meal. By now, I was exhausted, hungry and cold. My meal came. Delivered by a guy who had to be at least 75 yrs. old. I felt bad he had come out in the storm so I gave him a good tip.

My roast chicken, mashed potatoes and salad all looked so good. However, they forgot a fork. Have you ever eaten mashed potatoes and salad with a plastic knife. Not easy when you are shivering cold. I left the chicken until it was cold and ate it with my fingers.

The room was so cold, I had a hot bath after that gourmet meal and jumped into bed. Next morning, I was up early and took the 6:30 am shuttle to the airport. Still no cabs but the snow had stopped and the roads were clear. Things were looking up. I got to the airport and immediately asked about flights leaving. I was assured they would be ok if the runway conditions improved. Well, I had almost 4 hrs. before my flight left. I figured for sure everything was ok. I went and had breakfast and coffee. I had loads of time so I bought some magazines and settled down to put in my time. Then, they started making announcements. Flights were being delayed. People had quizzical looks on their faces. One flight leaving for Calgary was ready to board, then they abruptly cancelled it. People were wild, they had been waiting as long or longer than I had to leave. Some had slept in the airport all night.

Then other flights were cancelled, now I was worried. When our announcement was made, I held my breath, but it was leaving. I was never so relieved. We had to stop in Ottawa on the way so it ended up a 3 hr. flight but at least I was home. Ours was the first flight they allowed out that day. I cannot tell you how glad I was to get home in my own bed. There's no place like home!

What would you do from Toronto when I was in Hamilton in a blinding snowstorm? No one with any sense was even on the roads.
