I have 3 large redwork pieces I bought at an auction. All three are very well done. One strand of floss and tiny, tiny stitches. They are floral designs and a saying beside it.

Two of them are 28" x 33" and one is 26" x 29" . The sayings on them are about sleeping.

"Sweet lillies close their leaves at night."

"Go to sleep like the flowers."

"A glorious morning unto you."

I think they should be hung over our bed, but I need suggestions for frames or hanging. How can I showcase them the best?

Oh I just love the sayings...I would take it to a framing shop and have them done there, well worth it.

Mary, I can envisage them in very slim gold frames, as long they have the same border, like a few inches of, say, white or cream all around the piece, (like cardboard) there is a name for it I can’t remember. Because they are small, it will make them stand out. Gold frame has to be slim, or it may look tacky. Hang them in an even row above your bed – I bet it will look beautiful! If you want to know the name of the border, let me know and I will find out for you.

Do you mean a mat (sp?) around the piece? A double mat would look great as well. Any framing shop could give suggestions how to display them best.

Love the sayings.:bluesmile

I intend to do redwork...I bought the book with all the presidents (an excuse to make this project educational)hahha
Even Mr. Bush is there. Now I need a light tracer to draw on the patterns. Its one of those take where you go projects.

Krystal, tape the patterns to a sunny window then tape your fabric over that and trace it. You won't need a light box.

I was serious.. I guess i didn't read backward far enough.. This is a form of embroidery in which you do the outlines.. (pictures, not filled in things like flowers) and they are done in one color only..
Somewhere on one of these threads a couple of weeks or longer ago, someone gave their website to see a couple of samples of some of it.. (dish towels, I think)
Now, about the purplework,,,,,.....
I think that would be cute.. I was not teasing you..:bg: :bg:

Bren,
here is a good site that explains redwork, and there is a little logo there as an exanple of a piece of redwork.

http://www.virtualgardens.net/SafeHaven/lessons/redwork.htm
you can look at it and read about it..

Hi:

I have done a bit of blackwork and it is beautiful! I have looked high and low for a book on it. I would be most interested in where a person can find a book on redwork and it is done in the same idea! I actually did a Christmas ornament a couple of years ago in redwork and it was really cute!

Any help in finding such books would be greatly appreciated!!!

Georgina, I think WalMart had a book on Redwork in the sewing department where they sell crochet books and such. Not sure but I'll look the next time I go and let you know. Also try Amazon.com they have everything.

This sounds v-e-r-y interesting…. I’ll be in it. I used to do embroidery (as well as tapestry, rug making, knitting and crochet) in my previous life. This could be fun, doing a Purplework!! :bluesad:

If you have a Michaels where you live, look for yellow envelopes, I think it says 'Aunt Martha's' iron on embroidery patterns.. The envelopes are yellow bordered white in middle w/ pictures of what is inside.. 5 X 7 inches is the size of envelope.. I forgot how much they sell for now.. $ 1.00 to $1.75 -- no more , I'm sure..and they have multiple patterns.. Say for dish towels, there will be 7, 1 for each day of week.. or a whole envelope full of baby designs, or whatever..I think Wal-Mart sells them too..
