The past several days we have been getting some awful emails. I never open them, the subject line is bad enough. I just delete them as they arrive. The sender is always just a female's name.
I questioned my 14yo son on what sites he may have visited when I wasn't watching. (I try to keep an eye on that, but I'm sure he's been online when I was next door, in the shower, etc.) He swears he has not been on any questionable sites. :nc:
Is there any way to make these emails stop?

Hi Bama,

We have two programs on our computer to stop these types of things.

One is Spamkiller, which filters your email...it comes with a list of filters, and you can add or subtract from that list. The reject list can be based on address, domain, subject, etc.

The other is a Netgear program which prevents access to certain types of sites. You can manually restrict or permit access for sites that fall through the cracks, but the program comes with preloaded filters(I think).

Hope this helps.
Take care,
Donna

OOOO I hate those!! I get them and I KNOW I am not visiting questionable sites LOL. I have been using my filters and it has really helped slow down those emails, I haven't gotten one in over a month atleast. I don't know how they got my name, I think they have bots or something that search the internet for any email address it can find.

I bought Norton Internet Control for virus control and it has parental control and spam control on it also. It prevents lots of these - and it would stop more if I'd leave it on. It won't even let me access sites that sell underwear when I have it turned on.! And it's regular, old underwear - not the hotsy stuff from Fredericks! You can set it up with a password and your teenage kids are "supposed" to not be able to change it. As smart as most of the teenagers are today about computers, I wouldn't swear to it! If I'd just spend a little time, I'm sure I could get it set up differently, but as a general rule we don't have any pubescent guys here that love to go to those icky sites!

Thanks ladies.
I don't think we're registered at Kazaa. Maybe some place else DS might have registered caused it?
I guess I'll have to get some type of software for parental control. I'm sure my son could get around it, if he wanted to. I even ask HIM for help with the computer when I'm clueless. THIS I don't want his help with.
A friend told me that when she installed the software, it wouldn't even let her go to a breast cancer site.:nc:

DS still insists he hasn't been on any icky sites.:nervous:

If this is of any help, I think that I can explain why some of us get a lot more of this garbage than others do.

About a year ago, I complained to a friend who is really up on these things, that I get a lot more of it than others who are on line as much or more than I. He asked me if I was on line frequently late at night, and I admitted that I was, but hastened to add that my e-mail address has never knowingly visited one of those sites. He said that doesn't really matter a whole lot. These sickos will buy blocks of addresses to send their garbage to, and the ones that are assumed to be the most likely to be interested are..., you guessed it, ...are on line late at night. He explained that if you are surfing, it is simple for them to grab your address and add it to one of these lists.

I started doing my own informal survey about who got this stuff and who was frequently on in the wee hours, and BINGO!

I certainly don't have an answer, because I'm not willing to use a filter that could accidentally block something that I want, so I just tolerate it and delete, delete, delete! For those of you with kids still in the house....., I'm sure glad that all I had to worry about was passing dirty pictures under the desk.

However, if anyone wants to know how to increase the size of anything or where to buy something better than those blue pills for half the price, I have all the answers ;> )

Another reason you get spam is just by using these boards or any other meassage boards...

Any type of message boards that you use and makes it possible to contact each other thru email also makes it possible for Spammer to send you email too...Alot of Spammer's just surf message boards for new email address's, that's why I never give my email addy on a board...

I love message boards but they can cause you to get spam email too...

another thing spammers do is simply guess an email address. for example if they decided they wanted to reach the @sew-whats-new.com domain, they would send it out to all names, or commonly used prefixes on emails @sew-whats-new.com
I have had the same email address for 4 years now. <email address removed for privacy> I get no more than 6 spam a day mainly about viagra, or loans. never with pics. My fiance gets the grossest stuff, I know where she surfs, and it's usually gov't sites because her pc is strictly for work. I go into the darker corners of the net (no, not porn) and am surprised I don't get more.

I maintain that
1. Outlook is too easy of a target, use something else.
2. windows is too easy, use something else
3. don't give out your email address without lurking at a site and seeing what people are like.
4. Spammers should be shot on site, like the buffalo were, until they are extinct.
I'm lucky I survived moms cooking :p

I have Cox Cable and I wasn't getting any "icky" e-mail until I downloaded the ICQ site for the Guild. I was getting such gross stuff that DH went through my computer with Clean Sweep and cleaned it all out. I now no longer have ICQ and am no longer getting the "icky" stuff on my computer.

My way of getting rid of questionable e-mail? Simple, I delete it if I don't know who sent it! These boards let you know who is sending mail, the junk doesn't.

First, in the place where it asks you to delete your name if not interested, don't do that! It simple places you on another obscene list by another company.

This filth was coming up on my system at work, and I don't surf the net in the wee hours of the night. I believe it started when I made the mistake of going into the gambling sites out of interest. I never did download any gambling sites, or gamble at all. But I suddenly started getting these disgusting emails. I am still deleting these annoying emails at work.

Also, if you email or accept an email that has "an attachment", don't allow the email through. Apparently, on AOL the attachment can carry a virus that affects your system (this is what I was told by my computer guru). He told me that 9 times out of ten, when he's fixing someone's messed up system, they have Netscape or AOL as there search engine. Darn. I rather enjoy the Netscape format. He suggested Google for the search engine or Yahoo.

You know those FREE Aol discs you get in the mail. Use them as coasters and DO NOT download them.

Another place they get your addy from, that I have found anyway, is game sites. My son and boyfriend were always playing at coffeebreakarcade and it never failed that the next day, the inbox was full of junk.

So, beware, also, of game sites.
