Hi, I just bought a Singer 1411 and I am scared to use it. I used it the first night I got it and could not get the automatic bobbin winder (you can fill it while the material is still in sewing and do not have to remove the bobbin from the case) to work. When I took it back in the man that I had bought it from, the timing belt was broke. Please help. I would like to sew, but have the foggiest idea how to set tension, stitches and use this type of bobbin. Thanks for the help.

Hi, it sounds like this is a new machine? If something broke that quickly, I'd ask for an exchange for a new machine, even a different model. When you're ready to pick your machine (new or back in order) ask the sales staff to give you a hands-on demonstration of the basics. Bring some fabric with you. Then when you get home, read the manual thoroughly, and follow each step carefully. Some problems are caused by user mistakes, but I can't understand how a belt would break by misuse. Always make sure you have a good, new needle in the machine that is suitable for the fabric (example size 80/12 for cottons); adjust the top tension as needed and use a short stitch length for trials (2 - 3 mm). Hope this helps,

Hi pennypins-----Thanks for the tips. This machine is a used Singer 1411 and I did not receive an instruction manual. I was wondering if someone may have a copy of one that could xerox the pages for me.

Mollie, I"m not familiar with that machine...do you know how old it is? You can buy a manual from the Singer site for $15.00 http://www.singershop.com/cgi-bin/man.pl
there's also a site that shows threading diagrams for some Singer machines http://www.sewusa.com/threading1.htm
you can see if any of those are similar to yours. Once you get it sewing, post any questions in the beginner sewing discussion area and you'll get lots of help there for using the machine. Good luck!
