I'm on the lookout for an upgrade. I have an old faithful Jones , 4 step buttonhole, 9 stitches, which has seen me through much but the time has come...
I want something that can machine quilt, one step buttonholes and can thread itself ( the eyes are going..). I'm shortlisted to a Janome 6125QC + quilting kit at £329 online or Brother Super Ace III £349 online but walking feet extra. Hopefully I'm off to the shops soon to test run them. Both cost £50 more in shop including trade in. (and I have an offer to but my old machine already..) any comments
( this is £ sterling, and I'm not going to get Hubby beyond £350 without severe sexual favours... )

Magot,
I love my Janome MC 4000--- Its coming up on 10 years old and I have only had user problems with it.. (I thought I broke it , the first time I dropped feed dogs , because I didn't realize when you flipped the switch to bring them back up, you had to step on the pedal and start stitching to get them up) But a phone call to the Dealer settled that in 1 minute.. I love my machine.. If I ever have to get another, it will be same brand.. If I were younger, I might consider an embroidery version, but I don't think I can justify spending that kind of money.. So, I'm going to hire out the things I cannot do on my machine...When I bought it new, it cost about $ 800.00 US dollars..It was on sale-- 1/3 off regular price..This was in 1994.. :USA:

I have a Brother PC6000 that I bought for $599 US dollars a few months ago. It has an automatic needle threader, automatic cutter, start/stop button (You don't HAVE to use the foot pedal, but you can) There's loads of built in stitches and it came with a walking foot, quilting foot, cutting foot (looks like a serger did it), several other feet, has one step buttonholes .......... I could go on and on. I love it. There's several others I would have loved to have but I think I got alot for the price I paid for this machine.
The PC6000 is being discontinued, (will be replaced this fall by new model) so the price is low. My local dealer wanted $1200! I got mine online at www.louanns.com I'm not connected in any way, just a satisfied customer. :bluesmile

I thought I broke my machine the first time I dropped the feed dogs, and drove 3 hours to Canada to the dealer! I didn't know either that you had to start stitching to bring them up. Sigh.

I do love my Viking, but it's incredibly pricey - I don't know WHAT we were thinking. I haven't used the buttonholes, probably never will, I admit it quilts beautifully, but I also haven't used the embroidery. Hoping to change that with the new digitizing forum...maybe I can learn something!

Good luck Magot, check them out first before you buy! I hope you get exactly what you want!

Bama (and all )
My Janome does all that ... Threader, thread cutter, etc... all feet came with it.. including automatic buttonholer... all in one step, not several ... The only foot I had to buy separately was a walking foot...It has a small alphabet 3/4 inch letters in fancy and block letters also.. I can program 30 something characters at a time, I think.. I usually do a single name or a monogram..Have done 'happy birthday' a couple of times...
Monogrammed hankies for men make a perfect remembrance and they feel so special with a handkerchief with their monogram on it..

Hi Jan

I've heard god things about Janome & Brother. I have a Viking Lily 545 and I'm hooked for life. It has automatic buttonholes ( and I mean truely automatic! It takes me all of 10 minutes to put 6 button holes on a blouse) Up/Down Needle position, I can drop my feeddogs, Alphabet, numbers and tons of fancy stiches I can combine to creat even more stitches. And yes I've quilted on it and love it...( I paid aobut $1200 for it)

I just recent;y put the Vily Iris on Layaway for $999. This model does everything above plus it's a true Embrodery machine! for less $$ too!

They're a bit pricey, but these machines have an outstanding reputation and come with a 20yr warrenty. I plan to have them for at least that long!!

Oh and please don't forget to check out slightly loved machines for a great deal! Just be sure to visit a good dealer and shop around! If I had had the money, I could have gotten a floor model Desighner I for $1700, which sells brand new for $6000+

Are we talking about the machine there...? Pfaff seem quite expensive over here - even the cheapest is out of budget.

I have a Janome serger that I love. My regular machine is a Brother cheapie model from Wal-Mart (we were newlyweds. Hubby wanted to make me happy, but couldn't spend a lot). It has been a workhorse, but I would not buy another one. The cams (I guess that's what they're called) are plastic and wearing down. It doesn't really make even stitches anymore and never did do satin stitch too well. Just my 2 cents.
I think that given the choice between a new car and a new sewing machine, I'd take the machine. Am I sick? Nah.

Went to the shop to see the Janome and the man there was extremely rude.
"Well if you want to buy it, do it now" He did say however that they didn't stock Brother as they were a Belgian company ( spit over your shoulder) and they were of a lesser build quality. They had belts which tended to stretch after use. He recommended the Janome as a quality model and told me to make a deposit now! Get a grip! when I told him the price range I was looking at he sneered again and told me I couldn't afford anything. I wasn't about to in his shop - so we left!

Oh Jan that's terrible! I thought *I* had the only rude dealers in the country! I would certainly report him to Janome....I don't how these people expect to make money, but they must.

Sure hope you find someone better to deal with!

He had a variety of machines in the shop, Huskies and singer as well. The sad thing is when I spoke to the woman on the phone she was as nice as anything - we are a bit stuck for shops around here, they pretty much have a monopoly. I have however found a dealer on the web whose prices are £50 less and I don't have to give them my old machine either, so I can sell that separately. Guess where I'm Going!

Makes you wonder how these people stay in business. I went to buy a new pair of shoes last night. It was about 30 minutes until closing time. Every employee inthe store was busy cleaning up, gnoring the dozens of customers trying to shop. One employee was vacuuming and a customer tripped over the cord. The woman checking me out was complaining that people were still coming into the store 15 minutes before it was time to close. She did admit that sales had been down and they really needed the business. Doesn't she realize that those customers are her job security?
We are really lucky in the area that I live. There is a family that owns about four sewing machine dealers in the various suburbs around Dallas and Fort Worth. Their shops are wonderful. The employees are polite and helpful. I would trust them with either of my machines. They have wonderful classes, too. Maybe your rude proprietor could take some lessons from them!

Well, I've taken the plunge and ordered a Janome 6125 Quilters Companion of the web. It suddenly came down in price to under £300 and included a free gift of a mystery £15 worth of notions. I showed my DH the elna quliters dream £500 and told him that would be lovely so he feels he's getting a bargain too! sneaky? I don't think so. When he wants to upgrade something he keeps showing them to me for months ( sometimes years) before I finaly give in! And I can still sell my old machine on to a friend who is looking for a machine for her daughter to start on.
My lovelyman's comment was, "ifyouget this, will the painting EVER get done - I think not" nah!:bg:

That's great that you've finally got a new machine. I'm sure you deserve it, so just remind hubby of all the little sewing jobs you've done for him and his friends and family over the years!
I only just saw this post today, so this is probably a pointless question... but have you seen the new Brother machines that have just been launched? They have so many features on them that I don't think many other companies will be able to touch them. Can't wait to have a play on one, so far I've only seen pics.
Oh and by the way...Brother aren't Belgian! God knows where that rude little man thought that one up :nc:

Hey Debzy
some of them are all singing all dancing aren't they. I had a play on the new Star - very comfy machine - and my friends old brother that has been going for years is a regular workhorse. Did some lovely butonholes on it for my linen suit - I didn't want to ruin it with my old lag!
I didn't think Brother were Belgian but replying the conversation in my mind he could have said " belt driven" which might make more sense than the anti european stance he seemed to be taking! I was just so shocked! The company i ordered my Janome from couldn't have been nicer - the man even phone me back and said they were just reduce the model up in price to the same as the other and would I like an upgrade? Whay a nice man! I declined as it didn't come with the walking foot, extension table etc etc

Havening frightened Tony with the prices in john lewis it seemed to galvanise him into action :bluesmile
