I bought a Bernina serger several years ago.I had a difficult time threading it and couldn't get the tension right. It was too tight or too loose. It was a cheaper model.I paid $300 .I would like to buy another one.I would like to know if they're easier to thread and figure out how to get the tension right. I like the finished edge they give. Is the Bernina a good choice and hat's the price range.Does the price make a difference in the quailty? countryblocks02

I have heard rave reviews about the White 2000 (I have the Singer model sold at Sears and it is the same internally as the White - its made by the same people) EXTREMELY easy to thread. It is a manual threading - not like the babylock air threader... I have had little or no problems except the ones I caused myself.

Manual threading is that YOU thread the machine. My understanding on the babylock, is that you place the thread in a certain position, and it threads the machine itself with Air... don't really understand HOW but it does it somehow. Maybe someone who actually owns one would be able to clarify this.. my info is second hand of course. The White 2000 can be purchased online from www.allbrands.com for around $350US; The Sew-Elite (exact same machine internally) sells for $299US. I know your local store will be higher, it is a trade off, local available support or a cheaper price. Happy serger hunting! ==Brenda Lou

Buy a copy of Threads sewing magazine. This month they have a rundown of sergers and what to look for. Very informative.

I have the Babylock Imagine and the Evolve, on both of them you place the thread in a little port and then push the thread lever and it pushes the thread thru the loopers, both machines also have self adjusting tensions so there are no tension knobs to fuss with, thread is delivered according to the thickness of your fabric as sensed by the presser foot level, you can modify tensions by a little screw near the cutter but in the 4 years I've had the Imagine and the 2 years I've had the Evolve I have never had the need to adjust them. They are not inexpensive machines but for ease of use they truly can't be beat. I had two mid line Pfaffs and the first wouldn't cut thru anything heavier than quilting cottons and the second could never hold the tensions and I soon got tired of fiddling for hours to get it set for a decent stitch. Most of us have very busy lives and for me sewing is how I relax, the little bit of time I can manage to spend sewing I didn't want to waste adjusting those tensions so for me even though at the time it was a big splurge I bought the Imagine. Hubby not hearing me use foul language when I was serging anymore decided it was worth it so he surprised me with the Evolve so I would have the cover stitch. I bought the Imagine thru the internet and had never even seen one but had it up and stitching perfect 10 minutes after it arrived, I don't know that it would have been that easy to use and get it set if it did have all the tension adjustments and I honestly don't know if I would have bought thru the internet if I felt there might be a need for dealer help like there was on my two Pfaffs. Hope this helps you.

Thanks to everyone for advice. Now I need to decide which one and should I first figure out where to put it? My sewing room is so full it looks cluttered. I have wanted one for a long time cause I have so many uses for one.I think I'll use my joann coupon and buy thread magazine first though

Hi, I have the Babylock Imagine too. It is an awesome machine. It is expensive, but I think worth it if you use it a lot (which I don't). The air does blow the thread for the loopers. The instructions are very easy to follow. I tried once to thread my sisters old machine and after three hours and lots of swearing I gave up. When I went to my Bernina dealer he was selling the Babylock as well as the Bernina and one of the gals that worked there recommended the Babylock. I have never had trouble threading or sewing with it. Good luck. LindaMac Linda Mac
