My Necchi serger that I took to the shop yesterday is done and I will go pick it up tomorrow.

Now I need help and tips. I have never used a serger. I will have to get thread and other things I don't have like the tweezers etc.

I watched Fearless Serging by Betzina that I will watch again and take notes. I have a book from the library called the ABC's of serging, I am trying to find time to read.

Now I am coming to you experts for some advice, I admit I am a little nervous about this. The guy at the shop told me this was a great serger and it is like a new machine now. I have a total of $161.00 total in it. $10.00 at the sale and $151.00 from him, and $30.00 of that was for a new foot pedal.

Please help me as I make this new jump too.

Jolene,
Good for you. My newest serger cost me about $1600 not to mention all of the thread I bought so you've got a good deal there. Once you master threading the machine and adjusting the tension, it should be a great workhorse. Soon you will wonder why you ever sewed without one. Have the shop show you the thread pattern and how to tweak the tensions for your fabric. Buy at least 4 spools of white Maxi-Lock (for starters) and then practice on scraps until you are comfortable with it.
Happy Stitching!

Jolene,
My first Book on serging said to buy 4 cones of a light and 4 cones of a dark thread and use that for a while.. Until you get used to the machine.. If you want all thread color co-ordinated , you will need to learn how to use bobbins for some of the feeders or you will spend a fortune on thread alone.. I have white, cream, blue , green and medium-dark gray.. (4 cones of each).. Then I have a lot of wooly nylon colors .. I have gathered these over 15 years I have had my serger..Most of your seams are hiden so the thread does not have to match.. The ladies who wrote the serger book I like best Emphasized this point very strongly.. I do just fine that way..:bg: :bg:

Hi Libby
Would you please explain how to use the bobbins . Is there a cap you put over it so the thread can feed properly up to the eye on the tree? (my real technical name for that wire thread guide thingy)

Thanks much

In my accessory kit that came with my serger, there were 3 little tubes of plastic mesh for putting over thread spools to keep the thread from twisting around the pegs or whatever as they were feeding up to the tree thing..They look just like those tubes that come over roses from the florist.. In fact some of my friends bought extras from the floral supply co. in town because they were much cheaper than getting them from a sewing supply place.. And we liked the color better, Yellow instead of white..LOL:bg:

The only time I went to the trouble of the bobbins was when the thread was going to show... I do not do that for seam finishing, etc.. (too much trouble) and I filled them on my regular machine.. from the 1 cone that I would buy..:whacky: :whacky:

Hi Libby
Thanks for the info on the bobbins. My seger came with the thread nets too so I will give it a try. I am doing tissue box covers for gifts. I think the seams will not look very professional if the overlock stitches do not match the fabric color. The fabric is red and I really don't want to buy 3 more cones of red maxi-lock.
Now I just need to find 3 empty bobbins. LOL
