I purchased a serger earlier this past spring (my first). I am enjoying learning to use it. My question for all of you sergers seamtress here in cyber space, what "brand" of thread do you recommend for garmet sewing and also for home decor, such as slipcovers, etc. Mine came pre-threaded, but I have bought some of Joann's brand serger thread to try.

When I purchased my serger 12 years ago I was told that Maxi Lock was the best at the time. Since then I have had no problems at all with Maxi and compared to the price of spool threads, it is pretty reasonable. There may be other brands out there by now that are comparative, but I'll probably stay with Maxi as long as their quality is good.

I use A & E (American & efird Mills Thread) .. Home based in the south (Mt Holly, NC ) but it is top quality.. I have used several brands, but I buy only A& E or Maxi-lock for the regular cones of thread..

My next question. Do any of you have an online store that you purchase from? I live in a rural area, and the closest stores to buy thread are Wal-mart and JoAnnes. They don't carry these brands. I'm also looking for whooly nylon cones.

I have been checking out the ads at the top of the page for thread, but haven't ordered from any.

Thanks for all of the replys.

With regard to your Joann's store, does it have a sewing center? If it does not, ask the store manager if they can order maxi lok thread for you. If they say they cannot without sku's - this would be true - contact their customer service at the 1-800#.
Until recently, my store had a sewing center. The dealer there sold ML thread so the regular store could not. Now that the center is not there in the store, we have woooly nylon and ML thread. The manager at my store has been able to order Mettler threads for regular sewing as well.
Good luck - don't be tempted to use cheap thread!!

Hi Maxi Lock thread is very good thread. I use it all the time. Remember, you get what you pay for---Buy good thread---cheap thread will usually break====

I've read about a bunch of problems with Maxi Lock recently, but apparently if you mail them the defective cone they will send you a replacement plus more.

Thanks for all of the reply's. Just an update about Joann's Fabrics. I was at a store yesterday and I asked them if they could order it in. They said if I had a number from another Joann's that sells it, then they could order it. I'm assuming this is their stock number? BTW, I asked them and they are not a sewing center Joann Fabrics. :nc:

Atlanta thread is a very good source. They handle a lot of things that the home professional can use. I've ordered from them a lot and they are very reliable.

I use cheaper thread in the loopers for your average jobs because it uses so much thread (the loopers) and I use quality thread, maxi lock in the needles where the most strain on seams are.

I use the maxi lock thread in my serger too. I buy it from JoAnn's and Walmart. The wooly thread I got at JoAnn's. I think JoAnn's.com has it too.

I haven't had any problems with JoAnn's own brand but do sometimes get MaxiLock especially when it's on sale. I think the brand I get at Walmart is Talon, which always was decent thread for regular sewing.

I'm rural too, Sailorliz. The closest JoAnn's is 40 minutes for me. Needless to say, I shop their website a lot, lol. As far as other online sources, I just happened to click on one of those links for serger thread in another sewing forum and stumbled onto webofthread.com. I was hunting for orange cone thread and there it was! I'm sure they have every kind too. The regular cone thread is $2.25, not too bad for an online price. I couldn't find orange in a store to save my life--gotta love the internet!
