Hi, I want to buy a serger and it's between a Kenmore and a Simplicity. The simplicity has an elastic attachment and a blind hem foot but no catch tray. It's my first serger purchase and I don't know which one to buy. I'm experimenting with the kenmore right now. I would love to hear any opinions. Thanks Buttons

I don't have either serger but have 2 other brands. Kenmore I believe is made by Janome and they are known to be good. I do have a Janome very basic serger. There are reviews on sergers and sewing machines on line. PatternReview.com I think is the best ..they have so many. Epinions also has some. I would get the serger that you are most comfortable with. Ease of threading is something to look into. Does the lower looper self thread? Do you have to change the plate to do a rolled hem or is it automatic switchover. Is the knife easy to disengage? Is it noisy and does it vibrate? Are the needles easy to change and have a separate screw for each needle? Having to change 2 needles that are held with one screw is a bummer. Each one of us has different opinions about our brand of sergers and most brands have good models. I would continue to check out features, price, quality and ease of use either on line or test driving. You can buy a catch all if your machine does not come with one. Books on serging help learn new technique. Hopefully your serger comes with a video. It's nice if your serger comes with attachments but you can always buy attachments later. One thing I do prefer is a serger that has the lay in tensions rather than the knob tensions. My good old babylock tension knobs broke on me twice. I have never had trouble with the lay in tensions. Good luck in your choice..please let us know what you decide. Ky

Hi! If you can get to a Babylock store, I would try out the Jet Air threading on the Imagine. It is unreal and works like a top. I have the Evolve which is more expensive because it does a cover stitch, too, the nothing beats their ease of threading and NO Tension!! It is unreal, but I serged a heavy material last week, and then I serged a thin plastic garbage bag (crazy project) and all I had to do was to begin serging each one. It even amazes me everytime i go from a heavier fabric to a thin one with no adjustments!

Good luck! There are lots of good sergers out there. I still love my first one, too, but I did have to learn to thread it!
