I uncovered my new serger and am finishing some edges on a top I am making. It seems to be going pretty good -- so far I finished a couple seams with it. It took a whole afternoon just to re-thread it and change the needles and set the tension. But I did it and I'm pretty proud of myself. I have mixed feelings about it though. It is a lot faster and reduces bulk but doesn't look as nice as the French, flat fell, and turned under methods I usually use to finish edges. Dorothy |

Nope, not as nice as french seams or any of the other refined finishes. It does have its place though. Especially if the fabric is really ravelly. I have a Ralph Lauren blouse (silk twill) that is serged. Then they turned that edge under 1/4" and edge stitched. That is done with every seam but the armholes. A really beautiful blouse, inside and out. MaryW

Wow! You have a right to be proud of yourself! I am impressed. (I cheated and got hubby to thread mine while I held the manual.) I hereby promise to unthread it and do it myself. Think of all the new brain cell connections that we're creating by learning to serge...and the beautiful new creations that will shortly be filling our closets and gift lists... Good Luck to You! |
