Ever lovin' hubby offered to buy me a serger for my birthday (well he asked what I wanted - it's the same thing) I've been researching and almost decided on the Janome 744D then we saw an Elna and he would prefer to buy me the Elna 686 because he loves the stich quality and feels it is a much more substantial machine. It is about £150 more than I had planned on spending but as he says - why buy a machine that doesn't do all you want if you just spent a little bit more....What a star!

So obviously I have to play with it a lot when I get it - but doing what? I don't want to start on the trousers I plan to make with an untried machine - we don't bother with napkins, I have no babies to sew for, I have no fleece in my stash...I suppose I could make a few tote bags. Any other suggestions - I hate sewing like a mad woman and not having anything to show at the end of it.
love and kisses, Jan

You could make some throws..fleece throws are great if you want to purchase some fleece, it is very easy to work with. Throw pillows are fun to make. You could decorate some tee shirts with flat locking or apply piping on some things. Just starting out many people like to also make little things like eye glass cases, and holders for the remote controls in the house.
