Hi!

I was wondering if you changed the needles on a serger the way you would for a regular machine. Ex, Ball point, sharps, etc...

My manual doesn't mention anything to this effect...

I really got a sucky manual with my Singer....

Thanks for your advice!

Hi Tammy,

Which model do you have?

My manual tells me that I have to use #2022 overlock needles...sizes 14/90 & 11/80 only. I have a 5-thread Singer.
Take care,

I have a 5 thread Singer also and it uses the same needles and they do come in 10, 12, 14 for woven and non-woven fabrics, light knit, heavy knit, etc. and yes, I do change the needles in my serger depending on what type of fabric I'm serging, just like in my sewing machines. The manual that came with my machine is pretty decent, if I could find it. That along with the book to my Quantum 3400 seem to have disappeared into the black hole a/k/a my sewing room. :re:

That is an intelligent question Tammy, I asked what needles my new serger used and the lady in the shop said Smetz - but not ballpoint ones just ordinary needles. I took that to mean I size fits all but it looks like that could be wishful thinking.

Mine says use regular household needles which I take to mean the same as in my sewing machine -- right? I'm still working on the extras that came with the machine. It does mention different sizes for different fabrics and the sizes seem to correspond with what you would use for the same fabrics on the regualr machine.

Yep. Many sergers use regular household sewing machine needles.

Well, I have the 13J334 and it uses regular machine needles...

Personally I do not believe it when a dealer says that I have to use a specific brand name product... It's actually illegal; did you know that? It's against the Magnuson-Moss Act...

Anyway, I've been banging away at this gorgeous new toy of mine, and I don't see any needle problems yet...

I'll keep y'all posted...

I sssssssooooo love my serger!!!! :bg: :bg: :bg: :bg:
