Yesterday I cleaned up my serger, oiled it, changed the thread and changed the needle all in about half an hour.
I'm ready to make some new pants.
I might get the hang of this thing yet. I am becoming less intimidated every day.

In no time Dorothy , you will be a Serging Woman Of Great Magnificance and entitled to put the letters S.W.O.G.M after your name. Better than being a S.W.O.L.I.

ROFLMAO!!! :bg:

Dorothy, what do you think of your serger overall. Will you go back to finishing seams in some of your garments or are you going to serge everything from now on.

Sometimes I want a nicer finish and I will ignore my serger. Just becuz I want to give it that little extra. It becomes almost a luxury thing. Other times I don't have the time. I remember when SandraB. was here. She said she didn't serge a lot, she wanted the nicer finish on her clothing.

Mary --
I probably will do other finishes more than serged ones. And I'll probably combine the two. I'm working on a pair of pants now. I will do flat fell seams on the inseam and the center seam but serge around the pockets and down the side seams.
I like the serger but I'm not in a big hurry when I sew so I expect I will continue to spend time doing the nicer finishes.

Once you get to know your serger and take it to different levels I think you will probably be doing more than seam finishes. It is so much fun too. Even little things like flatlocking over areas of a garment then using the decorative or even shell or zig zag on your regular sewing machine over the serged stitches in a different color thread..you can create so many different designs. These designs cannot be done on a serger or sewing machine alone. They are the combination of the two created by you. There is so much one can do with a serger other than just doing seams and hems and coverlock. I hope nobody misses out on the fun of it.

Actually, Kylnne, that is what I really what I bought the serger for but without any instructions it will probably be a while before I do it.

Dorothy, I have been learning a lot of different deco things for the serger mostly from books. Especially the books with pictures :) Sort of a monkey see monkey do. I was wondering if there were any videos out in regards to this and where one would get them.

I found a book at Clotilde.com called "Serge Art" for $10. It has a lot of fun projects to try for decorative serging. I know there are others on the market but my brain cannot remember the names ... another senior moment, I'm afraid. Happy Stitching!

Dorothy, I just gave away many of my Serger books to my DIL. I have a few left but one of my favorites is very old and I have had it many years. It is called "Knowing your Babylock." Some other newer ones that I still have are The Complete Serger Handbook, Serger Secrets, ABC's Of Serging, The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide, and Serger Shortcuts. These and more are probably at your library if you did not want to buy them.

I'll put the list in my tiny little pocket PC and look for copies when I'm in bookstores.
I was in the quilt store last weekend to get a light bulb for my sewing machine and looked for a book on serging but they didn't have anything. I haven't found anything in JoAnnes either. I may end up looking on line but with something like that I like to thumb through it first.
Oh well, no hurry.

Dorothy, some of the books are sold at sewing machine dealers. Most of the big bookstores also have them. Marty I will look for Serge Art. I wonder if Clotildes still has it. Thanks for recommending it.
