I read somewhere on here that people use their serger to gather. HOW???? My manual tells me what setting to turn the nobs to but nothing else. All I am getting is a flat serge, no gathering. I know I am probably missing something so obvious. Help me please!!!!! Gina

Hi Gina, If you are using a 3-thread stitch, then you can gently pull on the needle thread after serging(The needle thread is usually the shortest one in the chain). To gather as you serge, tighten the needle tension. If you lengthen the stitch, it should gather more. If you have differential feed on your serger, set it at a higher number. You can also serge over cording, making sure not to catch the cord in the stitching. Then, just pull on the cord to get the amount of gathering you like. This is just like zigzagging over cording with your regular machine, but faster. Of course, the amount of gathering you achieve also depends on the weight of your fabric. Hope this helps. Take care,

Let me see if I got this right. If I were making a little girl's dress with a gathered skirt, I would serge around the skirt only (just like if I were sewing two lines on a regular machine) then attach it to the bodice? Somehow I was picturing it gathering the skirt as I attatched it to the bodice. I guess that is why I wasn't getting the effect I wanted. Good thing I was just playing with scraps and not working on an actual dress.

I think it is possible to gather the skirt while serging the skirt and bodice together. I've tried it on scraps, but never actually used it in garment construction. If I remember correctly, the part to be gathered goes on the bottom. Then you have to hold the top layer up away from the bottom layer, so that the two layers get serged together, but only the bottom layer is gathered. I guess it is something that you would have to practice first.
Take care,

You can gather the skirt and attach it to the bodice in one step but you will need a gathering foot to do this that separates the fabrics. Some sergers can do it just with the foot depending on the type of foot the serger requires and another type of serger has a foot that needs an added attachment that separates the material. By adjusting your needle tension to the tightest and lengthening your stitch also put your differntial feed all the way to the gather position. You can also gather with clear elastic. |

Hi---Yes, u can gather with clear elastic but if the elastic is next to the body, the elastic will stick to your body--not a good feeling---been there done it. |

Well I tried the three thread gather and pulled in the fullness just like I would have with the double rows of stitching on the regular machine. It worked wonderfully! I will gather this way from now on. Thanks for all your help. Later I might look into the gathering foot but for now this works.

Puffing is done the same way on a serger by gathering up both sides of fabric strip then inserting it into a dress or something nice that you might be heirlooming. |
