I found a site which listed features to consider. They are suggesting this:

"Tension adjustment that is automatic or self-adjusting to eliminate "trail and error" to achieve the correct tension. "

How important is this feature?

I don't know if I would say it is important but it sure makes it easier having the auto tension. Auto tension is especially nice if new to serging. For instance..one of my sergers has to have the tension dials adjusted for almost every different stitch..it has 18 stitch programs. With my serger with the auto tensions I just dial the numbered stitch I want on the program and it is automatically set. This makes it the easiest serger I have ever used. You can still do an overide on the tensions if you desire. I have only had to do this once. Auto tensions save time and frustration but manually setting the tensions can still give you a good stitch on machines that do not have this feature.

I have a manual stich tension on my serger and it can be a pain sometimes trying to get the tension just right but that is why i started my scraps box i use these to test the tension before i start to stich....and i keep my singer serger book and manual in arms reach to help with setting the tension...i guess i should start writing down the setting for each type of fabric that would make it alot easier to just reset the tension...

Auto tension, it is :-)

I'm not particularly patient with sewing, so if I had to fiddle a lot, the serger would sit in my closet.

Thank you for your advice.
