At one point during a soccer game, the coach called one of his 7- year-old players aside and asked, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative. "Do you understand that what matters is how we play as a team?" The little boy nodded yes. "So," the coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when a foul is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, yell at the referee, or call him an idiot. Do you understand all that?" Again the little boy nodded. He continued, "And when I take you out of the game so another boy gets a chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach a dumb idiot, is it?'' Again the little boy agreed. "Good." said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your mother and father." MaryW

My husband coached baseball for years then became president of the Babe Ruth (young teens) league for about 10 years. I can tell you this is so real. First it was the mothers that were a pain. They'd come to my house and yell at me or my daughter when their little boys didn't play enough. Then, when he was coaching older boys, it was the fathers. They always know more than the coach. He would come home grumpy because of them. When he was president of the league it was the coaches. They were really a pain. They would all call me with their problems if he was at work. All this and my husband never had a son playing ball. But all these parents that know so much more than him didn't have time. Dorothy |

dorothy, how true about the coaches. my husband was Little League pres for five years when our older kids played. It was so bad dealing with the coaches that our younger two don't play little league at all. SOCCER ( a dirty word to little league) is their sport!! |

patti -- The one thing to keep in mind is that the coaches are dealing with the parents who are a pain too. It seems the adults have to have their little power games although the kids just want to play ball. My dog plays soccer, too. Dorothy |
