I'm making a very light, unlined "jacket" for my daughter. It has no facing, just turned under and hemmed around the edges. So I thought I'd try the cover stitch on the serger to do the hemmed edges. Should I just turn the edges under twice and stitch it or serge around the edge then turn it under once (Then I wouldn't have that neat stitch on the underside, would I?) or serge and turn it twice then do the cover stitch? The fabric is light -- but not sheer --, ravels a little and the garment is loose enough that the underside will show. How would you do it? I'm looking for the neatest not the fastest finish. I'm not sure that I would turn at all because of the added bulk. The cover stitch should take care of that edge. The underneath stitches should bind it. Try a sample and see before you do it. I found that if I do something really lazy like apply 505 to the edge of my hem when I turn it, I can stitch it in place and then just worry about feeding the garment straight through the coverstitch. I just put a large piece of paper on top of the inside hem and beneath the hem when I sprayed so that I sprayed about an inch of the top inside hem. Then I "stuck" it in place before I began. I had been very concerned that I would be able to keep the garment from walking underneath and getting a straight finish on the facing without puckering. This worked very well for me and allowed me to get good placement on my hem and stitch very close to the top edge (inside where I couldn't see it).

OK Pam, since YOU suggested it I'll try not turning it but I'm obsessed about raw edges. I'll let you know how it turns out. Don't worry -- I'll test first. Thanks. Dorothy |

I did it, Pam, and it worked. It took me a while to figure out how to thread the machine for the cover stitch. I couldn't get at the looper thingy hole. Twice I took the presser foot and plate off and threaded it but that didn't work. So, like we say in my house, "When all else fails, read the directions." Turns out there is a little lever that moves the thingy to where you can easily reach it and all went well from then on. I practiced a lot and ended up putting a sticker on the table to mark where the edge of the hem should be to catch the edge in the stitching on the underside. The only problem I had was doing the cover stitch hem around the neck. The fabric didn't get caught in the stitching on the underside because of the way it stretched at the curves. I just reached in the drawer, pulled out some bias tape and sewed it on the underside (using the sewing machine) with about four rows of stitching. It covered my mistake and reinforced the neckline so it won't stretch out. Thanks to you Pam, my daughter will have a nice birthday outfit. Dorothy |

Congratulations! Doesn't if feel good when things start to come together. These new machines are so intimidating...and soooo cool when you figure it out!
