Which is the better way? I know it would be easier to serge the edges and then sew the seam so the fabric could lay flat but do you dis-engage the blade? If you serge first, would you get the true 5/8" seam allowance? I am "salvaging" THE blouse and not having used my serger except for rolled hems, etc., these questions just popped right in there. I need to put these sergers to use but they have me a bit intimidated at the moment. I have made some adjustments to the pattern so that my daughter will inherit the blouse. Thank you for your help. I normally only serge first if the fabric is a badly behaving one, and the serged edge will help it stick together for the seam, or else I will do it on a seam that is split partway (either because of a zipper or a slit or whatever). I disengage the blade when I do it. My other seams I stitch on the sewing machine first, then serge. I don't like to just serge because if I want the stitches to be small enough to hold up under my kids' wear and tear, there is too much thread going together on the edge. photos.yahoo.com/greendragondesigns

Green Dragon Lady, I did it your way and it worked very well. I serged the edges and pressed the seams open and it made a nice finish. Daughter tried it on and it fits. All that is left are the buttons and buttonholes. Thank you again. Luv2sew Luv2sew

Hi, i always want to press my seams after I sew them. Then I can serge the edges to look nice. How would you serge 1st & get a nice crisp press on seams? Valerie |

I always serge my edges then sew the seam. I get a clean press. It is really no different than zig zagging the edges..you can still get a clean press IMO. |
