When sewing on a 4 thread serger but only using 3 threads and one needle do you have to remove the second needle? It seems to sewing just fine if I leave it in and leave it unthreaded. I can't find the answer to this in the book that accompanied my machine or in the Singer book on serging.
Thanks.

Yes, you remove the needle that is not in use. You can change width setting or remove the Lt. needle for a narrower stitch or the Rt. needle for a wider stitch. Depending on your machine model you will change the stitch finger setting or change the plate to do a rolled hem.

I usually remove the needle so as not to have a hole in the fabric, but if you fabric doensn't show the hole I don't think it'll hurt leaving it in.

My instruction booklet says to leave the needle in but to set the tension on the unused needle to '0'. Its what I always do and have had no problems with it.

Maybe not removing an unused needle on a wide stitch might not give a problem but I would think if you moved the stitch finger to a narrow rolled hem the extra needle might give you a problem.

Not removing the needle will give normally not a problem, but it def. will with a rolled hem and next to that you are blunting a needle when it is not necessary.
With kind regards,

Yes, I would be afraid the needle would break or the serger would be knocked out of time.
