Ok, after reading through this forum and reading about serger timing, how do I know if my timing is out?? I've had my serger about a year now and have sewn a few thousand miles on it by now I figure, broken 1 or 2 needles by forgetting to take out a pin too close to the edge (oops - won't do that again) and it seems fine but I'd like to know what happens when the timing is out.

as far as I can tell Laura, it just don't sew stitches that stay stuck. Might make nasty graunching noises - but if the different needly things are out of whack it just won't form the stitches properly.

does your Serge make noises which it did not do in the beginning, does it still cut the fabric properly, does it still stitch properly? The first one with no and the other two with yes answered, no time for the maintenance man/woman, is one of these questions answered with an other answer than given above, your Serge should go to the maintenance man/woman.
With kind regards,
François

thanks for the help, its actually running quite nicely, but I think it needs a good cleaning, as does my sewing machine, so one of these days before winter sets in, I'll get them over for a quick clean and lube job. Got to treat those babies nicely!

If your serger is sewing properly it is not out of time. There are a number of symptoms that can occur depending on how far out of time it is and which looper is out of time, but symptoms that will always occur if it is out of time are  thread breakage and skipped stitches. If nether of these are happening you are not out of time.

Hi Tom Land and welcome to Sew Whats New.

You are, quite obviously knowledgeable of sewing machines. Must be a repairman, am I wrong?
