Rosalee, I have never owned a Brother serger so I don't know if my post will help but ..some sergers have a safety system built in. If looper cover or side cover doors are open or if the pressure foot is in the up postion they will not sew. Mind you, not all sergers have this safety system but you might take this into consideration and double check to make sure your covers are fully closed and that your foot is down.

I also have a Brother, I have never had it to that, but try looking at the website, they have a decent troubleshooting guide. Also, just a pointer, Brother machines do not like cheap thread, do not use the stuff that says Made in Mexico, like the kind you can get at Walmart. It screws up my tension settings and takes forever to get them right. Just stick with the good stuff. Wait until it goes on sale to buy it, tho. I think it will be on sale next weekend at Hancock Fabrics for 48% off. Good luck!!

I have tried all of the above.
I am using Birch thread, bought at Spotlight.
The hand wheel seems to be locked, will not
turn by hand.

Sounds like something is caught -- maybe a thread wrapped around something?

I have that model and I do not remember setting it up. The first thing I did was view the cd that came with it. brother does have a helpline number you can call. Go to Brother.com for that, Good luck, I have no clue what is wrong, I have used mine for over a year and no problems at all. :bang:

Sounds like to me you need to take the serger back. I have that same serger and I have never had it do that to me. And it did not require special unlocking or anything when I purchased it. Take it back while you can. you will love it if you can get one to work that is~ I love mine, and would not trade it for anything!

Thank you everone for all the imformation and ideas. It seems that when you buy a Serger they do not tellyou you must use it straight away so as not have it seizeup. So once again THANK YOU.

Wow, I would have never thought about that. I could not get my 1034D out of the box soon enough and get going LOL. You will love the machine and those cd's are very helpful. Have fun!! The first thing I found when I started using the 1034D the first time was how easy it was to learn.
