Although I have had sewing machines for years, I have never used a serger. I now have the opportunity to purchase a Singer Serger 14U234B. Is this a good one to start with and what do you think I should pay for it. It has only been used a few times although I think it is about nine years old.

Isadore,
Is it possible at all for you to try it before you buy it? Sergers can be very finiky  about alot of things, threading, tension and needles being the top three. If you know what your serger likes it will perform better for you with a lot less stress. The currrent owner wil be the best person to teach you aout it. Most sergers like to be threaded in a certain order and can be a real PITA if they're not. I like my serger (it's taken years to get to this point in our relationship!) but now I keep it tuned up and clean, replace the needles as soon as any skipped stitiches happen, if the tension needs adjusting I make minimal changes and don't try to put more under the foot than it as shown me it wants to take! Most of the time now threading is easy as I just tie the new thread to the old one just above the tension disk and ease it through here and at the needle eyes for the last 2. Think of the serger as a microwave oven, yes, you can live without one, but who want's to? It will open up whole new ways of sewing, streamlining mundane chores and polishing up your finished products.
