Hi everyone,

I've got a serger that has the differential feed. I can't remember for the life of me what my machine is now.. (sorry, I'm not at home) All I know is it's a Singer.. At any rate, when I first bought it last year, the differential feed was working (tested it out) and now when I'm getting ready to make my DD a skirt using that capability, it doesn't seem to do anything.. Could I have possibly clicked some type of lever for it not to work? Do you think it's possibly broken? It's not gathering anything at all.. Also, I'm just using the standard 3 thread overlock function, could that be that problem? Maybe? Someone? Anyone? Thank you in advance for your help!

It depends on the type of fabric as to how well it gathers. Softer fabric will gather more. Try tightening your needle tension, all the way if you have to. A longer stitch length will gather the fabric more. Try a wider 3 thread stitch too and see if that helps. Try using the diff. feed while changing the settings. If it still does not work you can serge over a filler cord like buttonhole twist, crochet thread or pearl cotton and secure one end of the thread then pull the other end to gather. If you have to use a cord then you might want to use a 4 thread and guide the cord between the two needles as you serge. You can also use a thread chain from your serger as a cord. Just serge off a cord the length that is needed. I hope this helps and I hope nothing is wrong with your serger.

Shalyn be sure that you don't have the differential feed on your serger set in neutral. My serger is a Singer 5 thread (about 5 or 6 years old) and the 0 on the differential feed sets it in neutral so that it won't gather or ruffle fabric.

Thanks Kylnne2, I've tested it on a standard cotton material, I just may have to revert to using the filler cord tip, if all else fails.. I'm on a tight schedule to have my DD skirt finished and taking it in to service will take too much time. Sad to say, I cannot part with my serger for more than a day..
