Hello, Happy Holidays to all. I am new to this site and have had alot of fun reading and seeing the wonderful caring and sharing people on this site. I hope to be a long time part of it. I came across this site because I am looking for a boys vest (7 y/o) made out of fleece. Found alot of sites for fleece but havent found anything with boys vests. Any help would be appreciated. The reason I am in sergers is because, I bought one (viking) 2 years ago without knowing how to use it because I loved making pillow Quills and have taken a class in placemats and napkins since then. These are the only things I have done on it and feel it is lonely and needs some attention. Any suggestions or easy patterns to use i'd really appreciate it. I do enjoy working with fleece even though I have read on many posts in fleece that they dont like working with it...I have 2 grandchildren and 1 on the way and am making the them picture apple core quilts for christmas and other items to keep warm with fleece. Sorry if Im running on or keeping you. I quess after reading so many posts , you just feel like your talking to friends. Thanks again Have a wonderful day and hope to hear from you soon. Hope Blessings

If you are close to a Joann's, the Simplicity patterns will be $1.99 next weekend(Dec. 10 & 11) and some of the fleece prints will be $4.99 on those days as well. Before then, fleece is going on sale starting this Sunday(4th) at 50% off.
Take care,

Welcome Hope! I am one of those who likes sewing with fleece, even though it leaves fuzzies all over the place. I have found though that I tend to not want to serge it, just because I broke my needles and threw my timing out while serging through some fleece. I've also found if it is quite a stretchy fleece, it can easily stretch while serging, which makes it wavy and looks ugly. I just finished my daughters jacket in a fleece with a knit backing and did serge the front edges where the zipper would go, but the rest of it is all done by sewing machine and topstitching. I'd only do serging on thin fleece now. If you still want to serge it, just go carefully over the thicker areas!!!

Laura, if your serger has a differential feed setting you can keep the stretch fleece from waving and you can end your seams nice and even. I serged tons of fleece for the holidays last year as gifts, plus baby gifts, even a dog coat and I made 6 very heavy fleece throws last night for gifts with my serger. I use a stretch wrap stitch for the edges. It requires both needles and only the bottom looper. If your serger does a two thread and came with a upper looper converter you will need to use it for the stretch wrap stitch. My serger has auto tensions and settings but last night for the first time on one of the more stretchy fleeces I had to overide my DF and set it on 2. It is the first time I have ever had to change one of the suggested settings but it did work well. I wish you better luck when serging on fleece. |

Welcome Hope! I'm too one that enjoys working with fleece, will at least don't have any problems with it. I will say that I have used the serger on some items with it, on some items I simply stay with the sewing machine as Laura does. Since fleece doesn't ravel or fray the need to overcast or lock the fabric is gone, so the sewing machine works quite well. If you do use the serger, I usually have to adjust the differential feed as it is a knit, along with making sure I have the right tensions for the density & stretch of the fabric. I always save scraps to test run before serging, check the stitches, pull slightly on the fabric to see if the stretch will pop the stitches. And if you are using it for clothing, stabilize areas that need it like shoulders & crotch. Thats my 2 cents

Well Hope, I usually set aside a block of time and sit down and start at general sewing and work my way down. My computer or this forum highlights the threads that have new posts to them, so it makes it much quicker to see what's new, but I do find I'll spend a good hour just reading and responding. Great way to have my morning coffee, but I find I need to do it at least every other day to keep up with everyone!!

Hope - 2 things I do to really help me are - 1) I have my profile set so that when I post a question or answer something on the board it subscribes me to that thread, then emails me if there are any responses, with the link to the thread. That helps me keep my place so to speak 2) I set aside time usually in the morning to look over 'new posts'. I click on the link that is directly new posts, so it only shows me the threads that have been posted to since my last visit. It works wonderful, even if I have a day that I didn't get to the forum, my place is still saved I just might have a little more reading to do

Hi Hope, welcome to SWN. Another thing you can do is to search for the posts that you have replied to. To do this you can select Search, then Advanced Search. On the right hand side is a box called "Search by User Name". Just type in your SWN user name and make any other changes you want to refine your search. After a while you will get used to things and there may be some threads that you will monitor more than others. Like I rarely monitor Sewing for Children, Machine Embroidery, etc. But I am a quilter and a bit of a sewer, so I usually check the 2 quilting and sewing forums first then either check date of the Last Post for a thread to see if anything has changed or I check the New Posts. Good luck and enjoy. TTFN from

You're very welcome, Hope! I am always happy to 'share the joy'! I went to Joann's yesterday and bought some fleece...there wasn't a lot left! I'm making a blanket with a braided-look edge. I found a neat little technique in one of those free Hancock's project booklets, and want to try it out.
Take care,

"I'm making a blanket with a braided-look edge" Donna, What is a braided-look edge. I only know how to make a pillow quill and the tied blanket out of fleece. Actually Im getting because the time is near and I still have a couple of gifts to make (or buy) and a fleece blankie would be easy. This is what I am feeling like today but this too will pass.....heheh (I have to remeber that) Blessings

I just finished the blanket. You can see photos of the blanket, before and after the 'braiding', here: Fleece Blanket (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/dmoses_99/album?.dir=7071) I complicated things by using different prints in one blanket. If you are using one piece of fleece for the blanket, it is much easier. Cut a 3-inch square out from each corner. Fold each edge 1 1/2 inches to the back, and stitch 1/4 inch from raw edge. You will have what looks like a casing on each side. Make cuts every 1/2 inch, going close to but not through the stitching. This will give you the 'loopy edge', which is very nice as is. To get the braided look, start in the middle of one side. Pass 'loop 2' back through 'loop 1'. Then pass loop 3 back through loop 2, and so on all the way around. It is sort of like crocheting a chain stitch. When you reach the last loop, tuck it into the first loop and stitch it down. Voilą! You have a braided edge on your fleece blanket! Take care,

How cool. That is really neat. They are really pretty. Please dont call me dumb , but it says fleece but did you make squares and sew them together like a quilt And if you did, did you use backing or is this only one piece??? Hope One day at a time (and information) Blessings

Yes, it is fleece, and yes I pieced it (12 1/2 inch squares), and no, I didn't use a backing(although I probably should have!) I used 1/4 inch seams, then finger pressed open and from the back, I stitched over the seams with a patchwork stitch...that finished the raw edges(more or less ).
Take care,

Thanks, Dorothy. It probably would have gone much faster if I had used my serger, but we are on the outs right now, and I don't have time to fight with it. Take care,

Very nice blanket Donna, I really like the edging on it. One of those things to try after Christmas. Shall have to see if they have the project on line as there is no Hancocks any where close to me at all.
