I just recently went back to the sewing machine to make clothes for my 21 month old. My mother-in-law bought me a serger and I have never used one before. I followed the instructions in the owner's manual and can only serge a raw hem. My wonderful teacher, my mom, showed me how to gather by hand but I noticed it can be done on the serger but I can't figure out how it works. Maybe it's not the same for all machines. My machine is a Sears Kenmore Overlock 3/4D. Thanks! |

Didn't you get an owners manual ? That is the first serger I got. Have only used it once as DH got me the Janome compulock I wanted in the first place. Your machine is the same as the Janome 634D & a good one. Ok, here is what your book should say to gather on your serger. 3 OF THREADS 4, NEEDLES 2, DIFFERENTIAL FEED RATIO 1.0 TO 2.0, STITCH LENGTH 3, NEEDLE TENTIONS( YELLOW & BLUE ) 3 TO 6, UPPER LOOPER THREAD TENTION ( RED ) 3 TO 6, LOWER LOOPER PRE-TENSION SLIDER STD, needle plate setting knob: S, tHREAD : NEEDLE: UPPER LOOPER: LOWER LOOPER: ALL SYNTHETIC, SILK. I HOPE THIS HELPS. This is the Kenmore overlock 2/3/4D Model # 385.16644. It does a lot of different stuff. Let me know if it's the same serger. I think it is. |

Here is a link to the post that I started a while back when I had your same problem. http://swn-archive.sew-whats-up.com/t-15029.html&highlight=gathering+serger Gina

I think that the best/easiest way to gather on a serger is to start with an extra long thread chain. Bring it to the front of the presser foot, and stitch over it, being careful to not catch the thread chain in the stitching. When you finish, you should be able to tug on the thread chain to gather up the fabric. It is similar to zigzaging over a cord, with your original thread chain as the cording. Hope this helps. Take care,

Donna, that sounds like a great simple idea to me. Can you tell that I like the easiest way to do stuff ? |

Thanks to those of you who answered my question. I will give them a try and of course continue to use the easiest like beachgirl says. ha! Also, beachgirl, I do have the same serger as you listed in the post. Thanks! Lori |

If your serger has a differential feed you can usually gather nicely just by adjusting it. |
