The "Holy Grail" of Cricket. The series takes place between two cricketing nations; namely England and Australia. It all began way back in Melbourne on the 15th of March 1877, just as a matter of interest, Australia won the game by 45 runs. However it wasn't until 1882, 5 years later, that the 'Ashes' were born as we know them today. A mock obituary was printed in the press: In Affectionate Remembrance of E N G L I S H C R I C K E T, which died at the Oval on 29th A U G U S T, 1882, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances R.I.P. N.B. - The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. and from then on the name "The Ashes" for the traditional tournament between England and Australia grew. Popular legend has it that the ashes themselves of the first bails are held in a velvet purse within the Urn - who knows? As a final word the term "Ashes" of course precedes these encounters between Australia and England and needless to say it is Ireland that bears the distinction in having the term coined. The Commissioners of the Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell banned the playing of "Krickett" in Ireland by an order of 1656. All "sticks and balls" were henceforth to be burnt (and thereby reduced to ashes!) by the common hangman. So much for the l9th century Ashes - events in Ireland preceded these by over two hundred years. love and kisses, Jan

Why? It's a very civilised game. You can sit and watch it in glorious sunshine on a Sunday afternoon, reclining in your striped deckchair with a glass of Pimms in one hand and a cucumber sandwich in the other. Periodically you have to clap in a langorous fashion or occassionally fan yourself using your Panama hat. Very relaxing. |
