All of a sudden, the foot pedal for my serger doesn't work. If I hold it in my hands and squeeze a certain way, it can serger -- slowly. The serger serges the best stitches possible, but I can't possibly serge holding the foot pedal. Besides taking it to my local dealer, who is closed today, does anyone have any suggestions??? Has this happened to anyone else???

The only time it has happened to me is when I have accidently pushed my serger against something under the machine and it was restricting the pedal. When I have moved it back toward me it has been fine. (Sorry.)

My sister's sewing machine foot pedal started doing that several years ago, and when she took it in to get a new one, the dealer sold her a new machine instead.."Said" he did not have a new pedal and cord in stock, and would take too long to order .. So, she bought a new machine.. This was when she had to make a 'Mother of the Bride ' outfit .. That is when she bought the Pfaff Portable with the IDF.... It is a great machine, but I dislike the circumstances .. I think he just wanted to make a sale..

Thanks, Libby. I brought the foot pedal into the store, but left my machine in the car. They said they needed the machine, in case it was the machine and not the pedal. I looked at the new machines, but I keep my machine cleaned and oiled, so it really sews beautifully. I just hope I get it back ASAP. Not that I saw everyday, but I'm lost without it. Joanie

Pam - thanks so much for your reply. No, my pedal wasn't stuck. But I wish I had all the great machines you have. Do you run a business, or do you just like to sew. I would really love to upgrade to a Bernina 730, but I guess I feel I'm too old to invest so much money into a new 730. But, one can never tell - I might just spring for it if I can get it for a decent price. The embroidery for kids clothes look so inviting to purchase.

Thanks, again, Pam.

Joanie..who can afford these things? I left work in 1992 and purchased my 1530 and 2000DCE to sew professionally from my home. I purchased it with part of my retirement. I sewed professionally from my home for about 7 years and it soon became necessary for me to add another serger so I added a pretty much unused 335 to help out. As my mother's health declined and she needed help, I moved my family into her (larger) home but had no space for my equipment and she couldn't handle the strangers in the home all the time....nor the noise of my work. At the time of my retirement, I also purchased at Pfaff 1475 thinking I'd have time to play...but I didn't. When my mom died in 2002 and the dust settled, I used part of my inheritance to purchase the 200E and a 1300 serger along with the Explorations and V4 Designer Plus software...and some more furniture to hold everything...and a computer...ok the list goes on.....

I've really enjoyed the 200 but I use it primarily for embroidery. There are times when I feel like I should have bought the PR600 because I do use it so much for embroidery but on the other hand, I have a lovely sewing machine that does fantastic embroidery! It has also been a social outlet that I wouldn't have had with the PR600. I attend the local sewing clubs and all...and there are a lot of people who use the same machine so there are many places to "plug in". I considered upgrading my machine to the 730 (just the upgrade, not the machine) but I decided against it because I don't know that I would use the BSR that much and that is all it offered me. I did get the free update to the flash drive though. If you'd like to visit my sewing room...it is here.... (we still don't have all the pictures up yet so I haven't posted the info too much but you might enjoy the "visit" anyway....my daughters "non" wedding dress is on the second page.)

Pam - Your sewing room is to die for!!! My sewing machine is in our family room next to a armoire I bought for my fabrics. I'm ashamed to admit to the large fabric stash I have. Looks like I'm out of control. But when I see a fabric I really love, I hate to pass it up. Too many times I found that when I went back, it was gone. On the top of this armoire, are nine thread boxes filled with thread in the different colors, but I can believe how many times I go to hem something for us, and I don't have the right shade.

Plus I have non-see-through boxes with woolly nylon and larger pull-out plastic boxes with serger thread in different colors. I too just retired, and we take care of our 2 granddaughter 1 and 3 every Thursday nights for a sleepover and they spend Fridays with us.

My mom is 95 and lives very close to us, and we have hired a lady to live with her, but we still have to take her to the doctors, do the food shopping, I do all her bookkeeping, pay her bills, take care of her banking, etc. So my retirement is rather filled up with family things. But I still love to sew. My machines are covered up, but never put away. I like to know I can sit at either machine whenever necessary. I would love a separate room just for my machines, ironing board, cutting table, but at this moment, I don't see that happening. The only time my sewing machine if lowered into the cabinet is when we are having a lot of company during the holidays, and that night, before I go to bed, I raise my machine up to sewing level. Makes my husband laugh. I guess it's my security????

Thanks for your replies and pictures. I'll let you know if I decide to purchase a new machine. I'll ask before I purchase one to get your opinion.

Anything I can do to help. When my dad added on to the house in 1960 he added a third area to the garage with the intent of being able to work on his tractors, do some woodworking, etc in that space. It was never finished. AFter Mom was gone, my oldest and her baby wanted us to convert it into a real space for them. When she moved out last Sept I took it over as a small office space...the pink room where the pressing things are located (along with fabric stashes...makes a great fitting room) and a large sewing area. A lot of the sewing pictures have not yet been posted. There is a large love seat and ottoman, some storage, etc that is not in the pictures. The total space of both rooms together is 14X 26. The smaller room is 14X6...so I have a lot of space. I tried to get my husband to move his computer desk where he does his photos out with me but he didn't like it out there and gave it all to me. I too have been caring for my 4 yr old granddaughter and had 2 in high school. This year all 3 of my children and my grand child too will move away within about 3 weeks of each other. With a 5 bedroom house, it is going to be an adjustment! I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with this next phase of my life.

Well, I just got the news about my serger. The good news was that my machine was in "pristine" condition. I knew that because I take care of my two sewing machines and my computer. The bad news was needed a new foot pedal, and he either said $129, $139 or $149. I just happy it wasn't the motor. I should have it back next Tuesday.

Pam, it sounds like you have a small hotel. How wonderful to have all that room for your sewing machines and your business.

God Bless,
Joanie

After years of slow graduation...from sewing with the machine on one chair and me on another...to a nice sewing room...I feel like a queen!!!

My mom was a teacher. We lived 5 miles from the school. My parents started with a one bedroom house in the back of a small convience/gas station. They spent most of their married life building on (toward the school). It was a family joke that one day Mom would be able to walk out of the bedroom into her classroom. As it happened, after Dad died, we built on one last time to make a large handicapped/living quarter for her. After Mom died we converted the space that would have been Dad's workshop.

"The bad news was needed a new foot pedal, and he either said $129, $139 or $149."

I don't know the Bernette model #s, but this price sounds very suspicious to me. Tom Land is more up to date, or write to Dave Neuenschwander on Bonos Berninas Yahoo Group to be sure this is a fair price.

Just for comparison, 3 1/2 years ago I had to get a new pedal for my Elna. A wire shorted and power could not reach the machine. I subsequently found out from another repair person that he could have fixed it. The foot cost $65 which every one thought was very expensive but I thought was what I expected other than I had not had the machine long.

I now have a new Janome. I am wondering if I have a loose wire in my foot for this machine (yet I am VERY careful with how I handle the attachment wires) as there is an occasional lag in starting the machine once I put pressure on the foot. I wonder how many other people have problems with their feet? When I look at my old Singer I see that the wires are much thicker and I never have a problem. I am just curious - about materials and workmanship. :bluesad:

I bought my 2000DCE in 1992. It was a "new" model. It could easily have been out for a year or so, I really don't know. The previous TOL serger was the 335 which had 5 thread including a chain stitch. When I needed to add a second serger to my stable I purchased a 335 for 1/2 its original price for $699 as a used machine. It is a very solid and reliable machine. The 334 was its companion machine which was sold for many years prior to 1992 I do not know what the price was on the machine I would expect it to have been $1000 or less new. I've been considering selling my 335. I see them on E-Bay frequently selling for around $300.

Would anyone know what a new footpedal for the 334D would cost? Do you know if used/repaired footpedals are available and at what cost?

I got my serger back yesterday, along with a new footpedal - $138.95 plus tax. It's so great to have it back. And I guess it was worth it since I don't know any other way to get a footpedal but through a Bernina dealer.

This can be looked at in two ways. The controller that comes on this machine is unique in configuration, but not in mechanics. Bernina gets a bundle for replacement parts, and your dealer probably charged you just about right for what Bernina charged him. The sad thing is that a generic controller would probably work just as well, and the wires could be snipped and a generic one installed for less than a third of the price.

Thanks for your comments, Bill. They gave me the old footpedal back along with the new one, and I'm going to see if I can get my husband to do just what you said. I'm dying to open up the old footpedal just to see what it looks like inside, and maybe I just will. Thanks again for that suggestion.

For that price they should have bronzed it and mounted it on a plaque.

I believe the Bernina sergers are made by Juki. Would the pedal be less expensive from a Juki dealer?

First of all, please note -- I will treat this foot pedal like a baby. Any who gets near it will be in major trouble. Secondly, does anyone know where you can pick up a generic footpedal. I have the old one, so all we (notice I didn't say I--lovey doesn't know this yet) to do is cut off the old footpedal and connect the wire to the new one. If I could just pickup a plain footpedal.

I know it was a lot, but my Serger deserves it!!! I plan to spend this day serging!!! Thanks everyone for all your comments and help.

God Bless,
Joanie

P.S. I can't have it bronzed and mounted because then I couldn't serge!!!
