My serger is a Singer and I love it! I've had it since 1995 and other than the occasional knife blade change I haven't had any trouble with it! The threading is easy and color coordinated. Also, you can just knot the new thread color onto the old in the loopers and run it through the serger that way. I do some stitch adjusting on scraps until the new color is showing on the fabric.
I use it for everything and even tried rolled hems. I used it on cotton napkins first before finishing a silk scarf. I am the sort of person who likes to play with things and see what they can do.
