Hello! I'm new to this forum (as well as to the world of serging!). I've never owned a serger before, but I have basic sewing skills and I'd love to start doing more. I'd really love to be able to make my kids' clothes (5, 3, and 16 mos) and I have this opportunity to buy a used Bernina 2000DE for around $300. Since I don't know a thing about sergers, I thought I should ask...Is this a good price? I know that it's in good condition and has all the accessories that originally came with it. Would this machine be okay to learn on? I've tried to research online and have heard a couple different things. Anybody have any thoughts? ANY info would be greatly appreciated!! |

That sounds like a fair price for that machine and it is a good one. Since you are not familair with sergers, if it is from an individual I would see if they would let you take it to the local Bernina shop and have it checked out.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

I bought a 2000DE about a year ago from a friend, after checking with the Bernina dealer, and have been extremely pleased with it. I paid $350 for it and the dealer told me I could "sell it for $650 and they would still be getting a bargain." However, I did not buy it to sell. I already had an 800DL but didn't want to miss the opportunty. I use both of them all the time and am well pleased.

I bought mine in 1992. It is a fantastic little machine. It is not difficult to thread or to use and it does a lovely 2 thread rolled hem...look for a little hat looking accessory that fits on the lower looper to block it out. Be sure that you notice the little tab to swing the looper out to threadl..that is so great!!! The users manual had just been added to the Bernina site as a free download if you do not have one. The manual for this machine is much better written than the newer Bernina serger manuals. The major thing to watch with this machine, as with most sergers is that you are sure to thread it in proper order. I paid a small fortune for this machine in 1992 and it has been a work horse forever!!! I used it professionally with my 1530 sewing machine for professional work and she has never spent a moment in the shop for anything but a routine cleaning...by the way, have this baby cleaned once in a while. I waited 13 years and the lint had built up under the cover where I couldn't see it...it looked clean and I was very good at routine maintance.
