I received a serger for Christmas, and I have a needle question that isn't covered in the manual. My machine uses regular sewing machine needles. When serging knits, should I change the needles to ballpoint or stretch needles, or are the universal's OK? I use Schmetz needles on my sewing machine, therefore I will use the Schmeta on my serger. Thanks for your help! Theresa

It is unlikely that your serger prefers regular needles although they can be used. Most sergers that will use a standard H130/705 are really designed to use EL705. Skipping on some fabrics may occur using the wrong needles. In answer to your question, Yes the needle should match the fabric. However you should not use the Singer Yellowband ballpoint as it is made differently than the others and the looper will hit the needle. The Schmetz univeral does work well unless you are sewing a densely woven fabric.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

Thank you, Tom. I haven't heard of the other needles, so I will do a search on them and learn what I can. I thought it strange that the topic wasn't covered in the manual or the instructional cd.
