I had a blouse nearly finished except for snipping some threads and finishing some ravelly seams. The frey check that I had used on the edges of the fabric made the fabric prickly. Welllllllllllll, I decided to do a rolled edge on the seams. I started with the armscye, and forgot to be sure nothing got cought up under the seam that wasn't supposed to. The serger cut a hole in the back of the blouse next to the armscye. I had worked on that blouse since fall. My amanda was going to wear it Easter Sunday. I patched the boo boo and it looks terrible. I will try to applique a rose cut from a scrap of the fabric to cover my patch. This is $20/yard fabric. I can't bear to just throw it away and Amanda is planning on wearing it. Let my error be a caution to the new serger owner. Be careful. The serger cuts of the excess fabric as you sew. It is nearly impossible to put back. Grandma C |

Oh I'm so sorry GrandmaC. Thanks for reminding us that those machines cut when they sew. I was good at catching the under fabric in the seam allowence. Let us know how you make the mend.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

I have a favorite shirt that, if you look very close, has a darned spot at the hem. And, yeah, I've had that shirt just about as long as I've had my serger. Dorothy |

Grandma C that's awful, sergers can cause a lot of damage, often when I'm working with $$$ fabric I will actually serge each piece separately and then sew the garment with a 3/8th seam allowance, helps if you need to let things out later too, I hope your applique works well. It may end up that after you do your repair that no one sees the problem but you! (Barbara Deckart's Sewing 911 book has lots of neat repairs)

Thanks for the encouragment ladys. Jeanett I will look for that book asap. I am so poor at sewing straight that I am fearfull of distorting the seamline if I serg before constructing the seam. I guess it is time to pull on my big girl panties and get over that fear or have more desasters to whine about. The tip on serging first is a good one and would have saved me some grief. Thanks Grandma C |

Oo, thanks for this thread. I finally have all the pieces cut for my dress, but I've been contemplating whether to serge them before or after the dress is put together. Now I'm thinking serging the pieces beforehand might be a good idea -- I'm kind of a klutz when it comes to catching things under the needle. Things catch when I don't want them to, and don't catch when I want them to!

Been there and done that also, in fact, just this past week on my Easter suit. Luckily, it was just on the back facing and I was able to mend it so that it's not noticeable and it's on the inside of the jacket, the back facing at the top at the neck seam. Every now and then I forget to check the fabric on the bottom when I'm serging and cut something. Once you do it. you're much more careful for a while at least. Patsy Patsy

Oh, GrandmaC, I feel for you. When I sew, I am always getting fabric caught underneath. I hope you are able to figure out a fix for it.

Well, My applique worked out fairley well. unless you are a seamstress tuned in to looking at others sewing then you probably wouldn't notice it. I'll send pics in a day or two. I want to finish the skirt to it but my darn serger is giving me fits breaking threads and I need to investigate the problem further. I have threaded and re-threaded and cleaned it cleaner than a freashly scoured toilet and now I just can't seem to get the tensions adjusted. The thread is the same thread I used 4 days ago to serge rolled edges on the same fabric and all I can think is that I changed needles and they wont work in my serger. I changed needles and the thread hasn't broken again but the tensioons are a pain to get back regulated. I guess I needed something else to get help with since the applique worked. Amanda wore the blouse to church even though the skirt wasn't finished. Thanks again for the encouragment and empathy!! |

I did that on the inside leg of a brand new pair of pants. Ticks me off every time I wear them, but I still wear them. I patched them and it's held quite nicely. Isn't it nice to know you're not the only one who makes those 'what the heck was I thinking' mistakes??? Glad you were able to salvage it!

grandma C check your needles to be sure they are all the way in the needle holder and make sure you've got them facing the right way for your serger. I changed the needles on my serger and got one of them turned the wrong way even though it was facing the right way for threading and it took me forever to figure out what was causing my thread to break on the needles. I was on the verge of throwing my serger through the window that right in front of the sewing desk where the serger sets. Patsy Patsy

I'll try changing the needles around again. I had my husband put them the second time and now I have ordered the brand name that was suggested by the manufactor. I am not sure where the flat side of the needle should be facing. I have a 10 year old White Speedylock 1500. I'm sure it is something I am doing wrong but what. Well it will be the weekend now before I can tackle it again. I am taking a break and having my hair beautified tomorrow. A new lease on life might just be what I need to get my serger and my sewing projects back on track. Thanks for the suggestions |

I ordered needles Organ brand/ they were recommended by the serger manuel. I got it to make a pretty nice rolled hem after an hour or two of tension adjusting. Finally the outfit is finished. Just about every post to this forum I have made since I first logged on have concerned this outfit from pattern adjustments for small bosoms to what sort of skirt to make to go with the blouse and then serging a hole in the blouse and patching with an applique. Well here it is. http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u174/grandmac_album/ |
