Hi all! I am a relative serger newbie. Dh got me one for Christmas, and I made Easter dresses for my girls on them. Now I'm trying to make pants for my 5yo, but I think I've got something set up wrong. I haven't been able to figure it out on my own, so here I am!

Anyway, here's the problem:

This is the right side (ignore the stitching at the top)

This is the wrong side.

This is the chain coming out of the machine.

It seems like the left needle thread isn't getting picked up into the chain. The last thing I did before this was a rolled edge hem. Did I maybe get the stitch finger back in wrong or not adjust one of the settings back right? I've tried rethreading everything twice. I just don't know what else to do. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Brenda

hmmmmm I'm not the best serger trouble shooter here (that would be Klynne2) but from the pix you sent it looks like a Viking Husk 900 series, I have a 910.
When you switched from the rolled hem back to regular serging did you push the switch at the front from R (rolled) to N (normal), second... did you rotate the little dial right by that switch back to N from 6 or 5 or what ever number you need for a rolled hem?
if that didn't work....
try a new needle, you may have a burr or something on it and it might also be bent,
also I find this serger is picky as old *&%* about being threaded in the correct order,
did your thread come out of the 1st tension slot on top before it goes through the dial (amazing how much mess that will make)
good luck!

Actually it's Brother 1034D. I set all the stitch length, width and tension knobs to the "average" settings from the manual. This is so much more complicated than a regular machine!! :-) I haven't tried the needle yet, though. I give that a shot. Thanks for the ideas.

I have that machine, and I'm a newbie, but I'll take a few guesses. First put all your tensions on 4. Does it make a difference?
Take your stitch finger off, then put it back on. Does it work yet?

Look at your needles. The top of the left needle (not the pointy end) should be higher than the right.
Fixed yet?

Change both needles, and rethread the whole stinkin' thing. in this order:
Green
Blue
Pink
Yellow.

Make sure your thread goes through the hole in the thread rack before it goes under the silver guide, then open the tension doohickey, and put it through there.

Was I any help at all, or do you want to throw the whole thing out the window?

I was pulling my hair out the other day, only to find the next day I had my presser foot up instead of down!

Another thin you might check is that the thread is in all the way in the tension disc. If the presser foot is dpwn when putthing the thread in the tension discs it will not go all the way in. Lift the presseer foot and give the thread a tug on either side of the disc and make sure it is in all the way. Hope this helps. I am a novice at serging and sewing and Have alot of mistakes to gather experience from.

All better. It was the needle. It was way too low. Duh. I feel really dumb that we spent so much time on something that turned out to be so simple. :re: I guess I got to know the machine better. Thanks for your help, guys.

Brenda, I think it is better to ask rather than spending hours trying to figure it out, or chunking the whole machine in the garbage can. Besides, I've found that even the most experienced people here make goofy mistakes. That makes me feel much better, and I even learn from them.

Lol, Dorothy, I wasn't thinking of a particular person.
I could probably have phrased that differently, but now I'm laughing too hard to think:bg:

Well, you certainly do NOT have the market cornered on duhhhh mistakes.. I do my fair share and more, let me tell you.. Here is the current "for instance".. I made a knit tee from that pattern everyone was talking about 5 or 6 weeks ago.. The pretty blue print with the wrap front.. (look of wrap, anyway).. Simp _076.. I cannot remember the first number.. Anyway, I was so tickled with my weight loss that I over (or under) estimated on what size to cut the shirt and now that it is finished, I cannot wear it.. I made it too small.. And it is so cute.. I made it out of a red cotton/poly knit., very lightweight, that a friend gave me.. She worked for a textile outfit that printed designer prints in small batches for shows.. I did not make the wrap style, I made the tee with the hole and the twist between the boobs. View D, I think.. I will cut the wrap style larger , you better believe.. I have a pretty butterfly print for that one.. Oh well, I have a friend who will like the red one.. My mistake, my loss..:bg: :bg: :bg: :bg:

It was nice of you, Libby, to make a shirt for your friend.
How thoughtful you are.

If we were all sewing perfectly:re: , there would not be a need for a sewing forum and I wouldn't have all of these wonderful sewing sisters. Keep up the good work.

I have "sewing moments" when my brain seems to have left and gone somewhere else without me. For instance, I was standing at my cutting table cutting out a paper pattern to get it ready to lay out with the fabric and stood right there and looked at the piece I wanted to cut out and cut all the way through the top half of it. Duhhhh!!! Good thing I keep lots of scotch tape around. One of the goofy things I do is sew all the side seams all the way up when I need to put a zipper in one (either back or side)
